As your resident Dr., I prescribe this for all of my friends here.

I urge you to listen to this a few times. There is so much here. :grouphug:

Dr. Gabor Maté on the Stress-Disease Connection, Addiction, Attention Deficit Disorder and the Destruction of American Childhood
http://www.democracynow.org/2010/12/24/dr_gabor_mat_on_the_stress

a Democracy Now! special with the Canadian physician and bestselling author, Dr. Gabor Maté.
From disease to addiction, parenting to attention deficit disorder, Dr. Maté’s work focuses on
the centrality of early childhood experiences to the development of the brain, and how those
experiences can impact everything from behavioral patterns to physical and mental illness.
While the relationship between emotional stress and disease, and mental and physical health
more broadly, is often considered controversial within medical orthodoxy, Dr. Maté argues too
many doctors seem to have forgotten what was once a commonplace assumption, that emotions
are deeply implicated in both the development of illness, addictions and disorders, and in their
healing.

Afterward, may I be so bold as to suggest that you also consider the extended family social structure that is generally the case for families in Cuba, and its impact on their progressive national social development.

1. Coming back to study this when it's quiet. Too important to rush through.
It couldn't be more worthwhile.

Thank you, Mika. Looking forward very much to giving it my full attention later in the day.

Amy Goodwin doesn't waste anyone's time, either!

6. Excellent!!!
From my personal experience with MS I can relate to most of what Dr. Mate says. I would go a bit further and postulate that depression is an immunological response to stress.
MS, for me, has been more cognitive than physical. The only treatment I have found has been physical. I can vouch for the severe impact of stress, any stress, on MS.
When I was first diagnosed, I asked what therapy was available and was told there was none. That was when I could not walk, talk or see. With the help of interferon I got past that stage, For cognitive therapy I was left to find my own way.

As you can tell, I still have problems organizing my thoughts and my attention span does not extend to Peace Patriots posts, but I am progressing; thanks to DU, which is excellent therapy, and all of you for putting up with me.

7. That's amazing, Downwinder.
:hi:

I bet you're right about depression. Mine didn't hit until my immune system crashed from years of very high stress.

8. Mika, IMHO Dr. Mate's philosophies would be applicable
with TBI, PTSD, Stroke, Gran Mal Seizures, or any case where there is brain damage. It stands to reason that if there is physical damage, there is going to be cognitive impairment. I have no question on the capability for the brain to rewire itself or to initially wire itself.

I compare the brain to a computer, with a basic BIOS that allows manual control of peripherals (arms, legs, hands, etc.). Usable control requires subroutines which are stored in memory and may need to be reconstituted after an injury. Patterning is a good example of that.

Another good example is the way people recover much more quickly at home in familiar surroundings than they do in a medical facility.

12. Too bad my family social structure was shattered
When we gradually left Cuba over the years. And I do have a tad of post traumatic stress syndrome they say was caused by Batista's bombers dropping 500 lb bombs on top of us.

By the way, I saw your little sign about operation smile, and I sent a donation after I checked the website. One of these days, we may even run into each other somewhere. :-)
