A Japanese tuna trawler off the South American coast has been boarded by a gang who call themselves the pirates of the sea.

Japanese trawler Kenyu Maru 2 was anchored five kilometres off the Peruvian coast when 20 pirates scaled aboard before dawn.

The gang surprised the 15-member crew, tied their hands and feet and took money, mobile phones and communications equipment before escaping in two row boats.

It is the second time this year that a foreign ship has been raided by the criminals.
