Uribe camp wants me convicted to take the heat off them: Ex-DAS director

Jorge Noguera, the former head of Colombia's intelligence agency DAS on trial for alleged ties to paramilitary death squads, told the court Monday that the former government of Alvaro Uribe wants him to be convicted so pressure on the former President will go away.

"The government in some way agrees to condemn me and suddenly the government thinks that with this ends all of the persecution against the Uribe government," said the former DAS chief who was appointed by Uribe when taking office in 2002.

Noguera is being charged in multiple cases involving the disgraced intelligence agency DAS which he directed from 2002 until 2005. He is accused of allowing paramilitaries to infiltrate the agency and allegedly ordering the murders of a Barranquilla professor, a union member and former congressman. The official is also accused of being involved in the illegal wiretapping of political opposition members, human rights activists and magistrates during the administration of Alvaro Uribe.

In February 2010 the ex-DAS head told the Supreme Court that Uribe had been aware of the agency's surveillance of suspected anti-governmental activity, whereas the Colombian government has denied knowledge of the DAS's specific operations.

1. Noguera may have just pinned

a bulls-eye target on his back. Or it would have been while uribito was top dog in charge.

It seems that Noguera is trying to weasel out some sort of deal by blaming the "former government" of uribito. Not clear to me whether Noguera is talking about uribito's first "former government" or the second "former government."

Right now the key players in the DAS/uribe connection is Maria del Pilar Hurtado, and more importantly, Bernardo Moreno. I am suspecting that Moreno may not fall on the sword for uribe, and if he does not, uribito could be in a world of hurt.

Another factor to consider is that uribito will be going up before the lower chamber's Comision de Aacusaciones to give a "free speech" about his "non-role" in the DAS scandal that was exposed in his second presidential term.

Last I read was that the Comision is made up of 19 members, 15 of them uribistas. So teflon alvarito will probably skate away unscathed once again.

2. 15 votes from criminals vs. 4 clean ones. Hmmmm. Wonder what the verdict will be.
What a travesty. It's right out there in the open for the world to see, then. Just like the coup in Honduras.

What's left, the ICC? A meteor? Lightning strike? Space invaders?

3. Remember Andrés Felipe Arias?

Minister of Agriculture under alvarito.

His ministry gave away millions of dollars (in pesos) that were to have been destined for poor farmers, campesinos and ag projects.

The millions went to wealthy landowners, some of uribe's political hacks, and even a couple of beauty queens got some of the loot.

Well, Andrés Felipe Arias, or "Little Uribe" as he was dubbed, is about to have charges filed against him and he may wind up in jail.

Arias was hand-picked by alvarito to replace him in the presidency, but the Agro Ingreso Seguro (AIS) scandal erupted and that was the end of that. Now, he will be hauled up before a court.

4. Yes, I remember! What an enormous insult to the taxpayers of Colombia,
and to the US taxpayers who are called upon to compensate financially for their corrupt government. We're required by law to make up for the stolen money meant to raise the sad quality of life for suffering Colombians.

It must have been hilarious when Urube met Arias, his instant appreciation of the furtive, deceitful, spiteful, backstabbing, cold, clammy appearance and manner. "What a mighty man he is!" Had no idea he was Uribe's intended replacement.

Thanks for filling in the information on him. Hope justice, this time, at least, will be served.
