Poll: Peru's poverty erodes popularity of president

The Associated Press
Sunday, July 20, 2008
LIMA, Peru: A nationwide poll says President Alan Garcia's approval rating slumped to 26 percent as he completes two years in office this month.

The Apoyo survey was published Sunday in El Comercio newspaper. The poll has margin of error of 3 percentage points.

Garcia took office on July 28, 2006, eager to redeem himself after a disastrous first government in the 1980s that left Peru mired in hyperinflation and nearly bankrupt. His initial approval rating was 63 percent.

Apoyo pollster Alfredo Torres says Peruvians are demanding advances against poverty and are concerned about inflation.

The country's economy is forecast to expand 8 percent this year. But 40 percent of Peru's 28 million people live in poverty.

It's too bad for Peru. I recall the days when Peru got mad and accused Venezuela of providing healthcare for its citizens. That was a rather pathetic moment.
