Venezuela blames US for Georgia-Russia conflict

CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is accusing the United States of masterminding the current conflict between Georgia and Russia.

A statement from Chavez's government alleges the conflict was "planned, prepared and ordered" by Washington in an "incitement of violence."

It gives no evidence to support those claims.

Venezuela is a close ally of Russia, which it says has acted to protect local residents from "unacceptable acts of violence" perpetrated by Georgian troops.

Venezuela's statement Thursday saluted steps toward peace in South Ossetia, saying Russia's stance has been in line with international accords.

President Bush has demanded that Russia respect Georgian sovereignty and territorial integrity

Georgian, US troops start military exercise amid escalating tensions with Russia

July 15, 2008

Georgian and U.S. troops started a joint military exercise Tuesday amid growing tensions between the ex-Soviet republic and Russia, a Georgian defense ministry official said.

About 1,200 U.S. servicemen and 800 Georgians will train for three weeks at the Vaziani military base near the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, ministry spokesman Mindiya Arabuli said. The drills were planned months ago and are not related to recent tensions over two separatist Georgian regions that are backed by Moscow, he said.

Georgia claims a string of recent explosions and border skirmishes in Abkhazia and South Ossetia are part of a Russian plan to annex the regions, while Russia claims Georgia is gearing up for a mid to take control of the regions by force.

5. Had Georgia Been An Important Arms Supplier and Diplomatic Ally...
Had Georgia, not Russia, been a major arms supplier and diplomatic ally, I'm sure that both Hugo Chavez and the Havana government would be blaming Russia, NOT Georgia, for what is happening in Georgia right now.
