The environmental group Defenders of Wildlife isn’t wasting any time sending the message that it will be involved in the race to choose who'll succeed retiring Rep. George Radanovich (R-Calif.) — if their archnemesis, former GOP Rep. Richard Pombo, decides to run.
Pombo, the former chairman of the House Resources Committee, was hit with over $1 million in attack ads from the group in 2006, the year he lost his seat to Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.). Pombo, a supporter of offshore oil drilling and opponent of environmental regulations, was one of their biggest GOP targets that year.
Pombo told the Fresno Bee Tuesday that he was “considering” making a political comeback, and will be making a decision within the next week.
“We’re not about to stand by and watch Pombo grab his carpetbag and return to Congress a mere four years after we worked so hard to oust him,” said Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund president Rodger Schlickeisen.
“If he runs, we’ll be there to remind voters about his corrupt record and why he was booted out of Congress in the first place. Surely the voters in California’s 19th district deserve better than Richard Pombo.”
Asked whether the group would play in a Republican primary featuring exclusively conservative candidates, its spokesman, Will Lutz, told POLITICO: "Anything to keep Pombo out of Congress. He is simply too much of a threat to meaningful, common sense conservation policy to do otherwise."
