I think the credit card bubble is going to burst. People are being forced to default. Jobs will be in the service industry and mostly temporary or low wage. Greed will not be defeated in 2010. The Uber Rich will still be Uber Rich and the middle class will shrink.

Jesus, I just depressed myself! Sorry!

But I don't think we can rebuild something that was already broken. We have to build something new.

"Greed will not be defeated in 2010."

That's a really good prediction.

The good thing is that people are trying.

Happy New Year.

48. It isn't going to be bad ...
The credit card bubble won't crash like the techs or the housing bubble, credit by nature is meant to be strung out ... I agree totally that people have extended themselves, but it isn't like a house, where if someone defaults on a mortage, the bank gets the house ... There is less certainty by far in collecting on credit, so it won't just all crash at one time ...

EITHER WAY ... Unemployment IS going to drop ... It won't be some miracilous 4 point drop ... But, it is going to drop ...

The GOP will scream bloody murder, but it will ring hollow that "they ONLY have dropped unemployment from 10 percent to 8.5 !!!

The Dems maxed out their house margin and maybe the senate a bit by the massive turnout for BO/against Bush ... The margin with even split seats or seats in R districts is going to close with a lower turnout ...

The Ds will lose seats, but it won't flip control, it won't be terribly close unless something really bad happens between now and then ...

1) Midterm elections will be held and not much will change. Party affiliations in both houses will only change by one or two (either way.)

2) President Obama will do something and the RWers will be outraged.

3) President Obama will do something (possibly the same thing) and the LWers will be outraged.

4) A major celebrity will die unexpectedly.

5) The Cleveland Indians will have another losing season.

6) The Sun will rise in the east at least 300 times.

7) The Sun will set in the west at least 250 times.

8) A major scientific breakthrough will be discovered, but we won't know about it for a couple years. (or at least not realize it's magnitude)

9) Something will happen with computers.

10) A child will be born.

11) Sometime in June, in NYC, a man will hail a cab in Mid-town.

12. On Dec 31, 2010.... DOW: 12750.... Unemployment: 8.1% .... GDP +3.2% for year....
In the elections:

Dems lose 2 seats in the Senate... and just 6 seats in the House.

Senate ends up 56 Dems, 42 Repubs, 2 "indies"

GOP filibusters EVERYTHING, starting in January of 2011.... and this backfires miserably on them in the 2012 election as Obama wins by a Reagan-esque landslide.

13. Interesting...
I think that your predictions are pretty good.

I would put GOP House gains in the 15-20 range as I think they will pick up some seats in the Deep South. Fortunately, there aren't many for them to pick up as a large chunk of Democratic seats in the south are majority-minority districts and pockets of progressive thought. The others tend to be Blue Dogs and those will the ones the GOP will pick up.

I think the teabaggers will knock off a few GOP incumbents in the primaries, particularly in Texas. They will win a few seats in the general and show off to everyone that they are crazy and that will be the end of their movement. It is possible the Democrats could make a gain or two in the south especially if a teabagger wins a primary in say, Tennessee, and then makes a dumbass remark about privatising the TVA or something like that.

I think Democrats will pick up the OH and MO Senate seats. I think Reid will lose in Nevada which will actually HELP the Democrats in the long run as without his wimpy excuse for leadership, the Democrats can then choose a new majority leader with some balls. I think Dodd is toast as well. If he retires, the seat stays Democrat, if he runs again, the Republican (likely Rob Simmons) wins in a squeaker then goes on to a landslide defeat in 2016.

Bonus prediction. In Arkansas, Lt. Governor Bill Halter primaries Blanche Lincoln and wins! He then defeats the GOP primary winner (possibly a teabagger) in November by a decent margin.

Edited on Fri Jan-01-10 04:27 AM by davidpdx
I have to say that. As for the balance of power:

Dems lose 4 Senate seats
15 House seats

Democrats still will control the House by a comfortable margin, but the Senate will be 54 Dems, 44 Repubs, 2 "indies". I agree with you that they will start filibustering everything and I'm going to even go as far as predicting a government shutdown (brief) as the Senate is unable to pass a budget.

16. There should be a wishes thread and we could compare.
Predictions --

Obama will continue to be no-drama Obama.

I agree, he will get his climate change legislation. How progressive it is is, of course, another question, whether it has the seeds in it for a real green economy.

I think the Democrats will gain seats in both House and Senate, not lose them, in the 2010 midterms, picking up more progressives like Alan Grayson, who is proving that being tough and ripping people's throats out is popular.

Holy Joe pays for his transgressions, not sure how, but I don't think he's going to get off scot-free for his betrayal(s).

the last thing we need, in today's economic environment, is to make energy more expensive. Give it a couple years, sure. But in the greatest recession since the Great Depression itself? Bad idea.

19. Democrats are going to lose seats due to the health care fiasco.
Lieberman will become a lobbyist due to the fact the republicans will mount a real contender because, unlike the democratic party leaders, they have never been under any illusion that they could trust him. I have no idea whether a republican or a democrat will take his place.

Obama follows through on his threat to reform social security and other entitlement programs.

Privatization of schools will continue and increase. At some point in future years, basic school/education will no longer be mandatory because disabled kids are too expensive and kids from bad homes will be seen as a hopeless cause and/or criminals in training. We will have a growing class of people who have no future but extreme poverty, begging, or crime.

21. My take
Economy continues to recover

Obama has approval In the early 50's In fall 2010

Lieberman campagins for Republicans and no Democrats

a number of blue dog Democrats are defeated by the Republicans.

Dodd,Reid,and Lincoln all are defeated.

Democrats win open seats In Missouri,Ohio, and NH

Democrats keep Colorado,New York,Illinois, and Delaware seats.

Spector survivies In PA,and Burr Survives In NC.

Republicans keep Kentuckey and Florida seats.

Most of the media will be forced to discover teh death of the Democratic Party did not happen as Democrats keep the House with a smaller majority and the senate Is a wash.

1) Osama Bin Laden will Captured and shortly thereafter executed.
2) Michael Steele will quit as RNC chair by Mid March saying he want to serve the country in other ways.
3) Mark Sanford will reign suddenly and without warning and move to Argentina.
4) The RNC chairmanship will be a free for all. The Tea Party crowd will ultimately lose, but the fight will serve as a catalyst for several attempts to take over party apparatus in Several states Very nasty stuff leading to the creation of viable Conservative Parties in several states and led Nationally by Michelle Bachman and Rick Santorum.
5) We will lose net ten in the House, but Gain +2 in the Senate.

28. Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin will vie to become the new face of the GOP
Edited on Fri Jan-01-10 11:13 AM by Armstead
The battle between the GOP moderates and wingnuts will break out in full force.

Sarah Palin will be the face of the wingnuts.

She will be challenged by Mitt Romney who will use his game-show host skills and chamelian-like tendency to position himself as the "safe adult" alternative to Palin. As usual he will try to have it both ways by spouting the same wingnut attitudes as Palin, but in a "kinder and gentler way."

This will cause Romney to become the favorite of the Establishment George Bush Sr./Chamber of Commerce crowd ....Or he might also crash and burn because he will (correctly) be perceived as an empty opportunistic suit by the GOP base.

32. My predictions
-John Paul Stevens will retire this spring. He will be replace with a woman, bringing the number of female justices to an all-time high of 3. The nominee will receive fewer votes than Sotomayor. Since it's an election year, the nominee will likely only get 60 votes.

-The Democrats will lose seats in the House but it will be less than expected (about 10).

-Reid, Dodd, Lincoln lose. The Dems win in Ohio and Missouri. So a net loss of one Senator.

-Unemployment will still be high around the election (8.5-9%).

-A crappy health care reform bill will be passed in January or February.

Michigan Predictions

-John Cherry will be the Democratic nominee for Governor of Michigan and Mike Bouchard will be the Republican nominee. Cherry will win by 7% (53%-46%).

-The Democrats will win the SoS, Attorney General, and the Senate.

-Michigan unemployment will drop to 11% by the election.

35. Predictions 2010

Unemployment will drop dramatically as the 2010 government census hires employees short term and participants simply run out of benefits.

Local goverments will be innundated with complaints by its citizens.

Dow will be near the same level it is at now.

We will see a dramatic increase in war casualties.

Gasoline prices will slowly rise to choke off any meaningful recovery for the middle class.

Obama's Administration will declare Recession over for many, which infuiates the lower and middle classes as they see no recovery.

Tensions increase with China over tariff increases on imported goods from China.

Emmigration to Canada increases significantly over past years.

Low-wage employment opportunities increase.

36. First, the naysayers will be proven wrong bigtime. Here's why:
1) Yes, the economy continues to improve and a new jobs stimulus passes. The economy will be the main issue. If people see improvement, Dems hold their own. It WILL improve, though modestly. With such a huge recession it will take two to four years to get all the jobs back.

2) Health reform passes.

3) An energy bill passes.

4) Iraq continues to wind down.

Put it all together, and in the end due to historical trends you probably see some minor GOP gains, but not nearly enough to re-take either chamber.

41. My predictions
Edited on Fri Jan-01-10 07:23 PM by Independent_Voice
Senate: Dems lose CT, NV, DE, IL, CO, ; Republicans lose NC, LA, OH, MO; that means a +1 net gain for the Republicans in the Senate -- Reid (to Lowden), Gionnaulis (to Kirk), Dodd (to Simmons), Burr (to Marshall), Vitter (to Melanchon), and Blunt (to Carnahan) all lose in squeakers; Lincoln survives over Baker in a squeaker in Arkansas, as does Ayotte over Hodes in New Hampshire; Castle (in Delaware), Norton (in Colorado), and Fisher or Brunner (in Ohio) win by 3-5 percentage points.

House: Republicans have a net gain of +8 seats.

Michelle Obama does either a major primetime interview with Barbara Walters or a major daytime interview with Oprah Winfrey -- whichever one she does boosts her husband's approval rating by 5%-10% as Mrs. Obama is able to effectively "sound bite" a lot of major rebuttals to the teabaggers. She also comes out swinging against some specific right-wing fearmongers, with a memorable one-liner that makes news headlines.

Three more European nations announce they're converting to the Euro.

China buys out one or two major U.S. manufacturers, leading to conservative-led boycotts of those companies.

HCR passes in late-January with minimal changes from the Senate version; however, in the following months, a progressive coalition of U.S. Senators (I'm thinking Sanders, Feingold, Whitehouse, Murray, Boxer, and Sherrod Brown) lead their moderate colleagues to support additional legislation that waters down the financial burden of the individual mandate on middle-class and working-class Americans; Obama publicly supports these provisions as important consumer protections in health care reform, and challenges Republican members of Congress to join their Democratic counterparts in passing them -- which they do, not coincidentally, right before the November midterms.

Corporate Executives/CEOS receive more bonuses.

Neither DADT or DOMA is rescinded.

A sequel to "New Moon" is announced.

Lady Gaga has another major hit that everyone will be singing.

The Jonas Brothers win another string of audience-driven music awards throughout the year.

Major tsunami devastates a large area of the South-Pacific in the late-spring.

More minor earthquakes this summer in Northern and Southern California and Baja/Northwest Mexico, but not "The_Big_One" that doomsdayers seem to be clammoring for. One or two minor earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest, which surprises seismologists who thought they had it all figured out.

A large cluster of thunderstorms rip through the Midwest and Great Plains in the late-summer.

Civil unrest in Western Africa.

Agree with one of the above predictions that there will be another SCOTUS retirement, and Obama's second nominee will also be a woman...probably a black female or Asian female, most likely someone with a moderate record. Republicans will attempt to portray her as a "left-wing activist" and filibuster her, and it backfires majorly on them. She is confirmed with 62 votes.

Rick Perry wins the primary and the General in the Texas gubernatorial election; Kay Bailey Hutchison reneges on her intent to retire from the U.S. Senate.

National unemployment rate drops by 2%-2.5% in time for NYD 2011.

Paris Hilton does something stupid and embarassing.

Emmys: "Mad Men" wins for Best Drama...again. "30 Rock" wins for Best Comedy...again.

"Modern Family" becomes a major primetime hit in the ratings.

Elin Woods signs a major book deal to write a "tell-all" memoir.

Sasha and Malia get another puppy in time for Christmas. Or maybe a cat.

In other words...a less eventful year than what the MSM is hoping for...

Are there major manufacturers (other than the auto companies) left in the US?

"Lady Gaga has another major hit that everyone will be singing."
Yep. It will be called "Telephone."

"The Jonas Brothers win another string of audience-driven music awards throughout the year."
I predict the band will officially call it quits.

"Emmys: "Mad Men" wins for Best Drama...again. "30 Rock" wins for Best Comedy...again"
Yes, I agree. I'm still holding out hope that Dexter wins best drama after a fantastic season. I predict John Lithgow will win for Best Supporting Actor.

Maybe not necessarily a manufacturer, but another big U.S. company or chain that is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.

I predict the band will officially call it quits.

Nah...they've got a couple of good years left. When Joe or Nick gets married, THEN they'll call it quits. Or, maybe down the road, Frankie will take the place of one of his older bros.

"Dexter" has a chance of pulling out a sleeper win. Agreed about Lithgow.
