Guess who showed up today at Biden's mother's funeral?
Those f-ing wackos:

A handful of protesters stood in the grass across the street from the church, chanting and waving signs with messages that included “God Hates Biden” and “Biden to Hell”. Westboro Baptist Church, an anti-gay group from Kansas that has also picketed the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, announced on its Web site that members would be demonstrating at Jean Biden’s funeral.

3. If there really is a HELL - I'm sure that's where they will be.
I don't understand how people can do this? Our fallen soldiers? A 92 year old woman?

I could just scream!

5. I swear those are the most disgusting people on the planet.
I think it's time WE staged a protest at their "church." Those "Christians" don't know the meaning of the word. What absolute filth.

The closest I have ever come to hating anyone is when they protested at Matthew Shepherd's funeral.

6. Very nice article, P. And there's one on Jean that said Beau called her every
night when he was stationed in Iraq. I imagine she was such a solid presence in Beau and Hunter's lives after their mother was killed, until he married Jill.

Some very nice photos, too. I think it was touching that Holder and Geithner attended, as well as Gary Locke (who I only recognized because he used to be my Governor). And as I said elsewhere, it especially touched me that Pelosi was there.

Thanks for posting this, although those hateful people should have been shuffled away.

7. A couple of years back, they came to my former small city...
Norfolk NE, when a soldier was laid to t rest. The "protested" outside of the funeral, but did not show up to the internment. I didn't go to the service, but I was there for the internment.

These people are the most vile of all of the groups that foster hate. For them to do this, actually sunk them lower in how we scale human. Phelps' "flock" is nothing more than family members and he is funded under the table by others who actually believe this guy somehow, "doing the right thing".

For a time, they received their funding by suing those who confronted them physically, but people have learned that in order to get rid of him, people have to financially break him, so they ceased with the physical confrontations. Just my opinion, but every time these jugheads show up, everyone should just line up and laugh at them, no arguing, no debasement, just laugh at them. The worst thing people can do is acknowledge them with vocal/physical attention...laughing at them makes them look like the jerks they are. I saw it work in one instance, about 15 people stood there and laughed...withing a minute, they packed up and left.

One of the most powerful things I saw, was during the Matthew Sheppard funeral procession...on one street, there were very few people in the entourage, but after they had turned a corner, there were hundreds in the entourage...and some of the HS students dressed as angels, silently stepped up to the barrier, then turned their backs to Phelps and his rabid kin. It was one of the most powerful exercises of protest I've ever seen, and those kids deserve all the praise they ever got. I can't recall the documentary I saw that in, but it was in a sociology class I was taking. Just thinking about those kids recharges me, as I know that people are still willing to stand up to bigotry...:)

8. Have they no shame?
Oh my god.

I cannot believe this. They must be from another planet. I do not know what must be in their heads or their hearts.

At the funeral of a 92 year old woman, for crissakes.

Sickening.

9. The only good thing in this is that the American people learn something once again
about the RW extremists in this country. They cannot avert their eyes, much as many would like to. It's right there in front of them.

If that had happened at my mother's funeral, I would have attacked them with my fists, screaming...

11. And if Joe's mother could speak today - she would tell you to go get them.
.....his mom taught him to punch bigger kids in the nose.

"When I got knocked down by guys bigger than me - and this is the God's truth - she sent me back out and said, 'Bloody their nose,' so you can walk down the street the next day," Biden said with his 90-year-old mom looking on adoringly.

"And that's what I did," he said to cheer

(from his speech at the DNC)

15. A soldier in my hometown was killed in Iraq, and they showed up at the funeral. But here's the deal:
a bunch of Frat-boy types from the local university showed up, too, along with a bunch of Hell's Angels biker-types, and the local cops literally had to protect these vile Westboro "protesters" from them.

It was odd to see a guy with a gray pony tail and a biker jacket standing next to a Frat-boy with a flat-top and wearing a polo shirt in common cause against these bastards, counter-protesting them. When the funeral procession left the church, the bikers all fired up their bikes and roared their engines to drown out the sound of the filth these people were screaming. Very satisfying thing to witness.

16. Two things about Westboro Baptist Church: one, they are not Baptist
even the reactionary Southern Baptist Convention has disowned them and, two, they are not a real church, but a cult involving people related by blood to founder Fred Phelps.

Even the Freepers hate these psychos since they began picketing the funerals of our fallen soldiers.

19. WBC wants attention. As far I can tell, they have no political influence whatsoever,
and they're not really closely connected to a larger movement. So one might as well just ignore them: they draw their energy from making other people angry

I thought somebody important showed up, to go by the headline. Those few pathetic fools are best ignored. They don't get attention on real media.

22. Phelp's family anti-gay group
showed up at Shawnee Mission East High School last year and the student leader(and Homecoming Queen..he is male) of the Gay/Lesbian/Transgender club organized a counter protest. All the 2000 kids came storming out of the school with signs plus parents, and college students from Schools within 200 miles of KC. The had an ongoing collection for Aids Research for every minute the Phelps group picketed. The students were polite but held their LOVE signs high, sang, and danced until Phelps left.

This is Kansas but every public high school has a GLT club and in Johnson county alone their are 12 high schools.

23. Freedom of speech is interesting that way.
The best part about freedom of speech is to remind folks that some speech is vile, reprehensible, garbage, and thus, not all speech should *ever* be considered intellectually "equal", or be "fair and balanced".
