Bill Clinton is United Nations' special envoy to Haiti
Edited on Wed Jan-13-10 02:35 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
He's also the head of a large international charity.

Will he have a special role in organizing relief or anything? (I haven't heard him mentioned since the earthquake so I was wondering if others had.)

______________

added link to July article about his first visit as special envoy, for the curious:

4. I'll predict he'll be named to some role by the UN today or tomorrow
Probably has to check with his wife, though.

5. He put out a brief statement this morning:
Former US President Bill Clinton, who is currently U.N. Special Envoy for Haiti, issued the following statement following the news of the devastating earthquake in Haiti:

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti.

My U.N. office and the rest of the U.N. system are monitoring the situation, and we are committed to do whatever we can to assist the people of Haiti in their relief, rebuilding and recovery efforts.

Reports are emerging that the head of the UN Mission to Haiti, Hedi Annabi, was killed in the destruction of the earthquake yesterday, as the UN complex crumbled during the natural disaster.

6. The UN mission there itself has reportedly had many lose their
lives in the collapse of the building they used. Ban Ki-moon was speaking about all this this morning. He, not Clinton, is the right person to be communicating this loss to the world, including many countries affected.

I would assume that Clinton is already involved in international relief efforts.

8. It was reported that Bill was up all night coordinating relief to the area.

The head of the UN there is one of the dead as is the Catholic Archbishop. The ambassador from Taiwan is in the hospital. The presidential palace is in shambles, along with some embassies, hospitals and schools.

The island is fairly devastated, they expect a high casualty count.

God bless them!!

10. Since relief efforts are supposed to be run by State Dept..he probably
wants to keep a low-profile so that Hillary won't be overshadowed. I'm sure he's working hard on it.

11. Since he works for the UN (in the envoy role) I was thinking of non-US relief
I assume he will be running around organizing contributions from other nations under UN auspices.

12. President Clinton was just on CNN.

He said that there's a desperate need for basic supplies right now. If you can, please donate to the American Red Cross or to his foundation.

Hillary has canceled her trip to Australia & New Zealand and is on her way back to help coordinate the relief effort.

On an aside, Bill said that Hillary took him to Haiti on their honeymoon because she wanted him to see the need there and the beauty of the country. He said that she's very upset right now.
