Brown taking a pass on State of the Union speech
This is good news, in my opinion. The last thing I want to see is his ugly mug in countless camera shots!

Brown taking a pass on State of the Union speech

M.L.

Boston (AP) -- Scott Brown is showing up many places, just not the State of the Union speech.

The Republican senator-elect says he doesn't plan to attend President Barack Obama's first speech on Wednesday because "I don't even have a business card yet."

Brown says he wants to wrap up his work as a Massachusetts state senator and thank people who helped elect him last week to the Senate seat held by the late Edward Kennedy.

He's also meeting with local leaders, Gov. Deval Patrick, Boston reporters, ABC-TV's Barbara Walters and doing a bit for Jay Leno's NBC comedy show.

Brown says he'll answer questions about the speech, but he thinks "it's inappropriate" for him to be commentating on the president's remarks.

On Tuesday Brown said he is eager to sit down with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to discuss the message in last week's special election that saw him upset the Democrats and claim the seat held by the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Voters showed they want the nation's political leadership focused on job creation, Brown said, and he commended the White House for shifting its focus back to the economy after his election halted momentum on a planned health care overhaul.

"I think it's a microcosm of what's happening nationally, when people are very concerned about work," the senator-elect said of his victory. "We're the best country in the world, and people, they want to work. And right now we're not working. I think it's good he's shifted gears and is going to focus on the economy and jobs."

2. Too busy being on Jay Leno?
Actually, I can't totally knock him if he says he won't comment on the speech either. But I bet Brown is caught up in adulation and the spotlight more then he is caught up in wanting to help govern the US.

4. Don't piss on this guy too hard..
He has the potential to be a Snowe in the long run. He may be a Republican.. but he might be one of the flexible ones at some point - and eventually we're going to need a few flexible Republicans.

I wish this seat was occupied by Kennedy, but the past is the past. Let's not piss away the opportunities for the future.

10. No, he doesn't.
He was backed by every wingnut "right-to-life" and Tea Party group from here to infinity, thinks global warming is a liberal myth designed to scare people, and has already said he will not support any health care bill in any form.

Scott Brown is a wingnut in sheep's clothing.

6. this is good in some ways, but i would have liked for Mass voters to see him
hanging out with the wingnuts.

for Scott Brown it's the politically smartthing to do. my guess is he will probably not side too much with GOP and if he wins during the regular election in 2012 that's when he will make a turn to the right.

since he will have 6 years he will probably spend about 4 years with the right and use the final 2 to move towards center/left in hopes of winning another term.

for us the good thing is the mediawhores wont get to keep showing him and reporting on the republican 41"majority"

8. I get the feeling this is a political move to show that this president has nothing
Brown wants to hear - to push the idea that Obama is a lame duck and Brown is the future.

I know the Pres is not a lame duck, but that meme could carry water, if the R's can play it right without saying it.
