Pelosi: ‘We Will Pass Health Insurance Reform’

Pelosi: ‘We Will Pass Health Insurance Reform’

By DAVID M. HERSZENHORN

The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, predicted on Friday that Democrats would succeed in winning passage of major health care legislation this year, and she described the bill as a core component of her party’s effort to improve the economy.

“Central to our fight to create jobs and strengthen our economy is our fight to reform health insurance for the American people,” Ms. Pelosi said in a speech at the winter meeting of the Democratic National Committee. “This is about the economic security of America’s families.”

And Ms. Pelosi said that Democrats had already laid the groundwork for a sweeping overhaul of the health care system by including billions of dollars in last year’s economic stimulus measure for “health information technology investments, electronic medical records and the rest, so that when we go down the path of health care, we’re off to a running start.”

<...>

“In a letter to President Obama, Senator Ted Kennedy wrote about the need for health care reform,” Ms. Pelosi said. “He said what we face is, above all, a moral issue. At stake are not just the principles, the details of the policy, but the fundamental principles of social justice and the character of our country. With Senator Kennedy as our inspiration, with the leadership of President Barack Obama and with your help, we will pass health insurance reform this year.”

2. The Pelosi quote and the title of this article tells it all
Edited on Sat Feb-06-10 12:54 AM by gristy
You aren't getting any health care reform. Or any health care for that matter. What you're getting is a program that assists the private industry that claims to assist Americans in paying for health care.

3. At this point, I'd like to see if it would work
I wanted the public option as much as everyone else, but let's see what happens if it passes.

4. Looks like we'll see nothing until 2014.
Well, not exactly, if it passes, more than a hundred thousands MORE will die in the meantime.

At least, we'll see that.

What a pity.

6. What is sadder still is that Pelosi can say it will pass.....
Edited on Sat Feb-06-10 01:00 AM by FrenchieCat
and folks still lament how it will not.

Health Care reform is so personal, till everyone wants what they want,
and the result is that we, as citizen, try to pretend that it was all
going to happen all by itself, although we were warned that it wouldn't be easy,
and still we sat and fought among ourselves about what was perfect and what wasn't.

That's the pity....

I believe that it will still pass....

7. No, what is sadder than anything else is......
that maybe a hundred thousands+ more people will DIE from the lack of treatment because they cannot afford the cost, in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 (while the DEMS R "at the wheel"). These poor people want.... want... they want to LIVE. Now there's the pity.

Not to mention all who will just lose everything they managed to accumulate for decades, and go bankrupt.

"If this reform is so fundamental and it is a "moral issue", why will it only become effective in 2014?"

12. My understanding is that there were many aspects that would
take place immediately! There was a list floating around.

I know that Children would not be refused due to pre-existing conditions right away...
and that there would be a bridge for those who couldn't get coverage now.

If I can find it, I will post it.

13. Maybe you should go back and read her quote. Why do YOU say "Health CARE reform" when
SHE says "Health INSURANCE Reform"?

15. Cause to a great degree, insurance reform is needed.....
as that is what keeps millions from getting any care; the cost issue.

But you can nitpick it all away if you choose.
The teabaggers worked hard for just that result,
so be proud.

31. If the best they can come up with is
a mandate at gunpoint to buy insurance without a public option, then I am wishing for it to die.

Edited on Sat Feb-06-10 01:27 AM by AllentownJake
and what month is this? I've been reading that headline from you since May of 2009.

Pray tell what wonderful reforms our elected leaders have in store for us after 8 months of promising.

10. Torn between two responses:
1) I'll believe it when I see it.

2) Yeah, we'll have "reform." We surely will.

It may be a crock of fermenting dung, but it'll be "reform." Can't wait.

16. Nope, I don't.
The point is that folks can get care, but they can't afford the premium that will allow it.
Quite connected in my mind.

I think they are about to pass the anti-trust repeal in the house....
or so I heard.

House aims to repeal health insurance antitrust exemption

28. passing something "in the House"
essentially is meaningless, considering the Senate's inability to do much of anything.

Obama's efforts as "Health Insurance Reform" and not "Health Care Reform". Wonder who's laughing now? I know I'm not.

We know you can't do it alone, and its hard to kick ass over in the senate, but take Harry aside and say, "look you pipsqeak, get your ass moving, stop sucking up to the republicans and DINOs and lead for a change."

21. It's spelled 'health insurance reform' but it is pronounced
throat warbler mangrove. And a mangrove needs a warbler like a fish needs a bicycle repair man. And why do these insurance salesmen in elected office always pray at breakfasts? Whey can't they brunch like the rest of their class? What, is brunch too good for them, it is against their religion? Enough with the mandated breakfasts and renamed avian species, enough I say!

30. Does a compromise with Republicans qualify as "health insurance reform"?
Or is she talking about a bill that strongly resembles the Senate or House bill?
