Biden to Scott Brown: Get your facts straight

Sen. Scott Brown, the recently sworn in Republican from Massachusetts, needs to get his facts straight before he goes criticizing the Obama administration on its handling of terrorists, Vice President Joe Biden said Sunday.

Responding on CBS’s “Face the Nation” to Brown’s comments that the United States should be spending money catching terrorists, not spending money to give them a lawyer, Biden said, “I don’t know whether the new senator from Massachusetts understands: When you get tried in a military tribunal, you get a lawyer too.”

“So, it’s good if we begin to learn the facts about all these things. You get a lawyer whether you’re in a military tribunal, or you’re in a federal court,” Biden added.

16. There *ARE* smart Repukes. They are deliberately lying and trying to mislead the
electorate, especially their zombie followers. They know exactly what they are doing and that is DELIBERATELY lying to the American people. It's part of Frank Luntz's strategy, and sadly it seems to be working. The Dems/Obama really need to hit back hard on all these lies. The Repukes are getting away with so much; it makes me depressed sometimes.

28. We jumped the gun on this one.
No offense to anyone who has posted already, but we dropped the ball on this issue. Biden presupposed that Brown doesn't already know that, but in fact Brown was a top defense atty for military tribunals. I'm sure Brown knows people get defense attys in tribunals. This was a hit point against Biden, he can't get it right all the time.

29. They why complain about us giving money to get the terrorists a lawyer in the
first place? You have a lawyer regardless of the type of trial so the money is spent whether it is a military trial or civilian one. Scott Brown was being slimy and disingenuous and Biden called him on it. If Brown was so smart and had experience on this issue, why say it in the first place?

31. Yeah...uh dude. Did you read what Brown said in the post?!
If he was a top military attorney why in the hell was he complaining that we shouldn't be spending money giving these terrorists lawyers in a federal court. In a military court where all Repubs want these trials to take place these guys are given lawyers as well. And since you said Brown is a military lawyer what was his point?!

He's a buffoon and for you to turn this on Biden says that you might be cut from the same straw. If his complaints is tax dollars, it goes into both. Unless he's advocating not giving them a lawyer at all---which would suggest we do away with our Constitution all together which seems a typical of Repubs in their bloody defenders.

33. LOL - a "top defense attny for military tribunals"? Thanks for the laugh.
So, he was defending mbrs of Al-Qaeda?

To correct you on so many levels of ignorance, he was a National Guard JAG attny who defended US Service persons who failed their drug tests.

And, oh, he also gave them real estate advice.

And, BTW, he doesn't think waterboarding is torture, either, so that shows what this JAG attny for the Nat'l Guard knows about military justice.

What a joke.

34. military tribunals
Edited on Wed Feb-17-10 06:12 PM by heineken80
In a court martial, a military member gets an attorney. In a tribunal of enemy forces during wartime, the defendant gets an attorney. That is the parallel I was making. This attorney is an officer in the military, in both cases. Scott Brown knows way more about military law than Biden ever will and it was wrong for him to challenge him on it. That was my point. What Brown was saying, is instead of imposing a $200 million per year cost on NYC for this trial (which is more than it costs to run the ENTIRETY of Guantanamo Bay) we could have just left him there and given him a tribunal. I'm not defending Brown, but if Obama is so sure he'll end up convicted anyway, why go through the dog and pony show and waste so much money?

36. So no one who has less experience in something should ever challenge anyone else on anything?
By the way, we tried tons of terrorists with civilian trials. They are all in jail. Of the 3 with military trials, there are 2 who are walking around out there now.

38. Nope, you were re-writing Scott Brown's resume for him. Why? I don't know.
Nice try at the backpedal.
We're not buying.
Looks like we at least embarrassed you into looking up the actual definition of "military tribunal".

If you think Scott Brown knows more than Joe Biden on ANYTHING, other than being a REPUBLICAN, you are in the wrong place.

41. Brown is overstating his resume
I heard him say that he has 30 years with the military, with 15 of those as a military lawyer. Now, he WAS in the National Guard for that time period, but it was also the time where he was a real estate lawyer and state Senator. A real question is whether he was ever called upon as a military lawyer to do anything.

It was Brown who implied their was no cost for a lawyer in a military court.

42. Brown was NEVER a top defense attourney for military tribunals
His civilian jobs was real estate lawyer and state Senator. The top military defense attorneys would be career military. He is getting more credit for his "30 years of military experience" than is warranted.
