Roberts is just looking for an excuse to quit!
His dirty work is done, he wants to now go and capitalize on it. All the rest is BS.

1. How 'bout, "He sucks!"
Is that a good enough reason?

His masters will insist he sticks around so his replacement doesn't overrule Citizens United.

3. I know he's complained
in the past about how justices are underpaid. Maybe they are. It's public service even a SCOTUS salary can't compare to the bucks that can be made in the private sector.

But I doubt he'll quit while Obama is in office. I think it would really bother him to let Obama pick his replacement.

8. In doing so, he denigrates the real honor of the position on the SCOTUS
As with most on the right, the honor of being in a position means nothing; it is what they can get in valuables...money, products, etc. Someone, however misguided and corrupt, got him onto the highest court of justice in the most powerful country on earth. That alone, I would think, would be a HUGE job perk. But no...what is in it for me? Where are my goodies? Where is the material plunder? Honor, dignity, real justice, the constitution, the American people...these mean nothing to Roberts and his ilk.

15. He knew the salary
coming into the job and he's worked in "public service" before this. I may be wrong on this but I kind of remember reading that in his tenure as a judge he always ruled in favor of the cororate interests over the individual.

So I would not beat all surprised to see him leave and go for the material plunder - just not while Obama is in office.

18. In the interest of a few facts in this discussion...
Roberts has never complained about the salaries of the SC justices. His salary complaints have been about the judges at the district court level and the appellate level. Part of the job description of the Chief Justice is to be the administrative head of the nation's federal judges and to be their spokesman. In this role he has made complaints about how they are paid. Other Chief Justices, both liberal and conservative, have did the same thing over the years.

9. He probably figures he is owed plenty by big corporations
for his help in finishing off the corporate takeover of the government.

 but ya gotta think about all the resignations in public offices of late and wonder just who is keeping dossiers on which hypocrite public 'servants'. Live by 'family values' die by them perhaps?

6. I wonder if last week's "rumor" of him quitting was just a trial balloon.
The SOTU speech was more than a month ago. Why is he just now whining about it?

11. That's what I was wondering, too
Maybe he was hoping for corporate offers to come in so he could made a better decision about what to do next.

I think he was on vacation and he collapsed. It wasn't the first time that's happened.

13. No, why would he give Obama the opportunity to appoint a CJ?
Doesn't make a bit of sense.
