There will be no public option, in my opinion
I base my view on the following:

1) Many congressmen are pretending to support a public option because they know it won't pass.
2) The fact that politicians often pretend to endorse things they don't like is illustrated by Jay Rockefeller's recent flip flop on the public option.
3) Dick Durbin is speaking against the public option: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2010/3/11/845146/-Durbin-Tells-Progressive-Senators-They-Cant-Have-the-Public-Option-Vote
4) Obama said he did not campaign on the public option, signaling a reluctance to go for it.

3. we need change in health care, for sure, there's lot of positive in the bill without the PO, but we
really could use the PO, and I like that the senator from FL (that other one is not a senator, he's a fill in GOPig) is now saying he's for it - he makes 41! We can have it happen still.

Good post.

8. I don't care what passes as long as it gets passed. This is all the first step to Single Payer.

This one fear-mongering GOP talking point is correct.

Single Payer is inevitable and the path starts here.

9. That is how I feel. That is what they are truly afraid of and why they will throw
anything at the wall to try to defeat it.

12. How is entrenching the for profit insurance industry (and the big players at that) lead to single
payer?

Do you believe moving the needle in any direction puts on the right path and that it is not possible to make a move that actually leads entirely elsewhere?

I don't even see an honest path to a highly regulated system of private non-profits in any foreseeable future (say 20 years), I think Conrad is deluded or full of shit on even that outcome from this structure and certainly don't see any green shoots of a realistic path toward single payer here.

What you are seeing is another 2-3 generations of private for profit insurance until the government can no longer sate them and the whole system collapses in a much poorer country than the one we know today.
