CBO: Health package costs $940 billion; Hoyer says vote will come on Sunday

By Michael O'Brien and Jared Allen - 03/18/10 09:21 AM ET

Democrats are lauding a CBO report that found their healthcare package will cut the deficit by $130 billion.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer hailed the figures from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office during a meeting with a group of reporters on Thursday morning and said the House would vote on Sunday.

He said House Democrats had crafted a bill that would amount to the largest deficit reduction package in more than 15 years.

“We think the numbers are now pretty well set from CBO,” Hoyer said. “We think it will post the largest deficit reduction of any bill that we’ve adopted in the Congress since 1993.”

1. One vote?
What's the latest on the vote? Are they planning to do the one vote on both the Senate bill and the fix? Gawd, I hope they do. Just because that would tick off the Republicans even more. McConnell or Boehner might actually blow a vein over that scenario. That would be freakin' AWESOME!

What would be even more awesome would be if they blew a vein and had no health care coverage to pay for it. But I"ll take what I can get!

2. The best part will be the Republicans' reactions after it passes
Will they still try to obstruct reconciliation, even though they will effectively be defending the Cornhusker Kickback and other unpopular elements?

6. It is beyond time to stop defending ourselves for using their tactics against them.
It is what a smart political party does, period. Plus, it will piss them off.

3. Don't know about that, but Shuster just reported the vote will be at 'high noon.'
I suspect it might be. It is just process. The president says a yes vote will be a vote for health care. I'm with the president.

4. Absolutely!
Again, Republicans have used every piece of procedure they can find to slow down the process. It's about time, as far as I'm concerned, that Democrats finally stand up and prove both sides can play that crappy game. I'm tired of the minority party holding this country hostage. Maybe if the Dems have the balls to use this deem and pass procedure, it will show the Republicans that they're not taking their crap lying down anymore.

I think the deem-and-pass would be fantastic. Perhaps a little "You stop filibustering every single thing we try to get done for the American people and we'll stop having to do end runs around your obstructing asses!"

Pardon my language. Nothing gets me riled up like the GOP.
