My prediction: Stupak caves.
Edited on Fri Mar-19-10 07:10 AM by jefferson_dem
That's my sense based on recent reports. Yesterday, Rep. Kaptur (one of Stupak's allies) said “I want to be constructive...We have to find a way to work it out.” She wants a separate vote on the abortion language, outside of the health care reform bill. http://www.rollcall.com/news/44371-1.html Today, she announced that she's working with Stupak on this deal. http://twitter.com/wonkroom/statuses/10718424382

I think this will happen. They will convince the House leadership to hold a separate vote on abortion, which will give them political cover while not torpedoing the health care legislation. The abortion language bill may pass the House but will be a total "dead letter" once it reaches the Senate. It will never become law. No way. Maybe we best hold off on adjusting the 60 vote super majority requirement for a while.

3. Here's how it works Bart.
Go ahead and vote against the bill you dumbass. The Rethugs will tie you to Obama anyway and the Dem base will abandon you (those few who still support you).

You're screwed Bart and you deserve it. Personally I plan to fundraise for your primary opponent in a county that used to be in your district. You know the one, where you still come to raise funds? Yeah, that rich little plum on the bay. We've got lots of well-off liberals here who are staunch supporters of women's reproductive rights.

4. This is a deal that was talked about a few weeks ago but it depended on if Stupak caved
and agreed to it. I think the HCR bill passes without him and some of his buddies so he is getting nothing no matter what.

Stupak Ready to Deal?
March 19, 2010 7:56 AM

That was my impression after interviewing him on GMA this morning.

Yes, he said, “I’m still a no.” But he also confirmed that there are lots of discussions going on to see if his group of anti-abortion Democrats to vote yes.

“There’s a principle we’re standing up for here…We’re getting to the end, there’s all these last minute negotiations. We’re taking part in those negotiations, no deal is struck, our resolve is the same.”

12. I think you are right
I think the most honest thing he could do would be to say that he had been convinced that he could actually move beyond Hyde to make abortion less likely to be covered even by privately paid insurance, but although he still believes that would be a good thing to do given his believes, the votes aren't there for that. Therefore, given that current bill leaves things where they were on abortion, he has decided to vote for it based on other values his religion gives him.

That way, he would hold true to his position on abortion - while giving a values based reason for voting yes.

7. I would like to see his church publicly excommunicate him and
tell the priests in his district and DC not to give him communion.
I know - it will never happen.

will pull the stick out of his ass and vote for it. He's too busy complaining that people want to spit on him. I guess I'd better get in line.

10. That might depend on whether his vote really is needed
I think one of the reasons why there are still so many "fence sitters" is that the House leadership will "allow" a number of Democrats who feel that they need to vote No for essential political cover to vote No, ONCE Dems are confident that they have enough solid votes to pass HCR. There are a certain number of "Get Out of Yes" passes available and there is a behind the scenes tug of war to see who gets them.

11. that's pretty much exactly what James Clyburn said yesterday
on Randi's show TR...I can see that sleazebag voting yes too, but for a different reason. He saw how much attention and face time Kucinich got when he did it, and we all know this a guy who loves to see himself on TV. He reminds me of Mike Pence-pretty boy always pushing his way right behind Boner-Marcia Blackburn too.

He is looking for cover, currently he is out on a limb and looking really scared. He may want to stay away from the nuns at his church. One of them may beat him silly.

16. In the end they will tell any Democratic Congressperson that a vote no
is a vote for war on the caucus and they won't be able to use the bathrooms in the capitol let alone pass something for their district.

They will all cave except a few from Republican districts who they think might get reelected and will have permission to decline.

18. He nothing more than the bishops kiss-ass fool.
Its time for Democrats to get rid of politicians that don't support the Party's Platform. There is no reason for those such as Stupid to be a Democrat when they oppose a major issue such as abortion rights. What can be said about the Catholic Church when they oppose any Catholic who refuses to deny the basic right of women to decide if they want to continue a pregnancy. It is about respecting the rights of others that may not agree with your religious convictions. While they attack those such a Kerry, probably costing him the election, they enabled Cheney, one of the most evil bastards that has existed, to launch a war that has killed thousands of innocent victims in his blood thirsty conquest for oil, spy on the citizens, out an CIA agent working to protect the nation and torture suspected terrorists. The list goes on and on...Maybe I shouldn't be all that surprised when given their history of the Inquisition and Witch Trails in which it is estimated that tens of thousands of innocent women were put to death for witchcraft. This is an episode in the history of Western Civilization that is not spoken of at any length primarily because the Catholic madmen were joined by the Reformationists. Take out time and read the Witch's Hammer (Mallus Malificarium)and read of their gross depravity and it will be come clear why women are regarded as third rate creatures.
