13. No kidding. 50 years from now the pukes will still be using the same
argument (if it even qualifies as an argument anymore).

24. I was among the millions in the drug trials of the vaccine.

And I remember the abject fear of the disease that literally overnight was soothed from people's minds once the Salk Vaccine proved so successful.

Regardless, it's an absurd comparison. HCR only benefits insurance companies and their stockholders.

26. Flouride has been tremendously successful.
Today's children have much better dental status due to it.

And the HCR will definitely benefit my family -- promises that my son will be able to have continuing coverage despite 'pre-existing conditions.' Yes, it gives away too much; but it is still a net benefit to Americans.

12. I was in my twenties when "Flouridization of Our waters" was a hot topic.
And since the vast majority of the Far Right (not necessarily "conservatives") were anti-Semitic, that theme was frequently introduced into their rants. I don't recall that particular flyer, but it well captures the "tone" of the discussion them.

Thanks for digging that up. I'll be putting it to good effect fairly soon! ("Stamp Out Mental Health!")

14. Flouridation turned me into a raving Jewish liberal...
Well, actually it was the circumcision that turned me into a Jew. Hard to blame that on the water.

16. When I was in Elementary school back in the late 50s, early 60s
I had a couple of classmates that spoke poorly about fluorinated water. Of course I didn't know what they were talking about. One thing I remember is one of the girls had blackened teeth, and she said the fluorinated water ruined her teeth. I remember talking to my dad about it; I don't recall what he said, but whatever it was he allayed my fears.

Advance 30 years from that, when my son was an infant, the doctor prescribed vitamins with fluoride, which surprised me, as it wasn't in our water supply.

17. A few local water supplies will have too many dissolved minerals in them, and need to be properly...
... cleaned up by the water district, rather than simply running it to to your kitchen tap. Sometimes said mineral is arsenic, after all.

If I remember correctly, too much fluoride really can blacken teeth, and have other effects. But the correct small amount is wonderful for teeth and bones.

The local water where my sibs and I grew up was so soft it almost qualified as rain water (and in fact really was rain filtered through porous lava rock to the subsurface "lens" of fresh water under O'ahu). We had "soft" teeth and got a lot of fillings despite meticulous brushing and few sweets. My ex-husband had fluoridated water where he grew up and a total of 3 childhood fillings, which was enough to convince me that giving our kids vitamins supplemented with fluoride would be a good idea.

Going back to what you said about your classmate, I think most kids' blackened teeth (or at least heavily mottled brown) in those days were from their mothers taking tetracycline while pregnant.

20. Doh! How could I have forgotten about tetracycline!
You're right, that is probably what caused her teeth to blacken. In my mind's eye, I can faintly see her, and her baby teeth.

I should have remembered tetracycline, (I've been retired nearly 10 years from pharmacy and that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it!) I do remember mentioning this classmate in school when studying birth defects caused by tetracycline, thalidomide, sulfa drugs etc.

Senior moment.

18. I get my fluoride on my teeth from a tube, and I don't swallow the shit.
That's fine. I wouldn't drink water that had that shit in it. It's bad enough when it tastes like chlorine bleach.

27. Remember those old days very well.
When I was very young my grandfather was the mayor of our small town. When the city council voted to put fluoride in the water a cross was burned in his front yard.

A few years later when my dad was on the school board and the school started driver's education for the first time it was assumed by most men in the town that only boys could take drivers ed. My dad insisted that females be allowed to take driver's ed as well and the school board passed the measure. That night a cross was burned in our yard. Also, a hand lettered sign was hung on the front door of my dad's business that said "Commie".

Try being my parents in an all white town in the midwest and explaining to their frightened children the bizarre use/significance of a burning cross. Explaining the "Commie" was not so difficult. However, to this day my family gets a big laugh out of the disparate and cowardly actions of some of our neighbors.

"Mental Hygene" shit, ya know - it's a Commie Jewish plot to fill the mental wards with decent god fearing anti-semites.
I hope all the people who really believed this stuff lost their minds in the '60's.....and I hope you young people can do it again to today's RWers...

(It's really fun fucking with them!!!!!)

(Go ahead, little girl - have some monkey serum!)
