Kucinich, Seven Members Applaud Nuclear Disarmament Deal
WASHINGTON - April 7 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) and seven other Members of Congress today sent a letter to President Obama expressing support for the Administration's efforts to negotiate a new treaty for nuclear arms reduction with Russia. President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are expected to sign a treaty to replace the expired Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) in Prague tomorrow.
"The successful negotiation of an arms reduction treaty with Russia lays the groundwork for future cooperation between our nations. Furthermore, successful negotiation of such a treaty is vital in advancing support for a broader international nuclear nonproliferation initiative. ...
"The successful and swift ratification of a replacement to START can serve as a strong starting point for the next stage of negotiations on further nuclear armament reductions. We stand ready to work with you to provide the necessary Congressional support for ratification," write Kucinich and colleagues.
The letter was also signed by Representatives Bob Filner (D-CA); Barbara Lee (D-CA); Edward J. Markey (D-MA); John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI); Fortney Pete Stark (D-CA); Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) and Michael M. Honda (D-CA).
