Obama marks Holocaust Remembrance day
WASHINGTON — US President Barack Obama on Sunday marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, saying the world must honor victims of Nazi horror by renewing a commitment to prevent genocide and anti-Semitism.

"We must never tolerate the hateful stereotypes and prejudice against the Jewish people that tragically continues to this day," Obama said in a written statement.

"We must work, instead, on behalf of a world of justice and peace, in which all nations and peoples value the humanity that we share, and the dignity inherent in every human being."

"The memories of the victims serve as a constant reminder to honor their legacy by renewing our commitment to prevent genocide, and to confront anti-Semitism and prejudice in all of its forms."

The president said he bore witness to Nazi evil during a visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem during his 2008 election campaign, and on his trip to the Buchenwald Nazi concentration camp last year in Germany.

1. It's also a reminder of how
bigotry, hate, and ignorance can out of control..the Holocaust being the largest tragic example.

10. Yeah, that stunt still gets pulled a lot.
"Palestinians are lesser people, and shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves"
"Israelis are lesser people, and shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves"
"Native Americans are lesser people, and shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves"
"American settlers are lesser people, and shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves"
"Hutus are lesser people, and shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves"
"Tutsis are lesser people, and shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves"
"Muslims are lesser people, and shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves"
"Hindus are lesser people, and shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves"
"Christians are lesser people, and shouldn't be allowed to defend themselves"

Part of what makes the I/P situations (there are at least two, in two places) so complex, I think, is that the lessons were never learned as being *universal*. Much of the thinking that still dominates territorial conflicts is one of entitlement.

11. Yeah, nationalist creeps.
The whole "we need a land for our people, to the exclusion of others" mantra seems to be a hard thing for humanity to shake.

The 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Cheney dressed in a parka - monogrammed with his name on the left breast - and a ski cap with the logo "staff 2001" like a campaign volunteer would get out of a swag bag. His wife (to the left of him - his left) also wore a fluffy parka, but at least it's black and not paired with a pair of sketchers

Basically he showed up to a memorial service for the death camp, dressed like he was a spectator at a youth hockey game.
