Here, there is no threat of Bush returning to office. Much of the hatred/frustration with him has somewhat dulled over time. In addition, there has been a lot of reputation scrubbing. (Newsweek's "mission accomplished" cover story comes to mind) On the other side, the media and their tea party celebrities have battered Obama day in and day out.

Given that Bush could not return, this really is a poll where people are either backing Obama or wanting to return to the Republicans. But, look at the results - assuming the 6% undecided split evenly - this results with Obama 51%, Bush 49%. This may reflect the true current balance between the parties.

What it may demonstrate is how much of the country is completely polarized. Even in 2008, when Bush's numbers were rivaling the worst any President had, Obama got 53% of the vote against one of the worst, most out of control campaigns I have ever seen. Obama, on the other hand, had one of the best campaigns I ever saw. Now it might be that he lost votes because he is black and the highest a Democrat could get in the best situations might b slightly higher. (Kerry getting more of the white vote in some southern states suggests this - especially as it is clear there is a southern bias against a MA liberal.)

The difference between the 53% at the height of people's anger at the Republicans and the (adjusted) 51% is actually not that bad. If they had a similar Clinton/Bush poll in 2005, I bet it would have actually had Clinton ahead. (I know in early 2005, a Bush/Kerry poll showed if the election were then - Kerry would have easily won. They found Bush voters who said they were vote differently, but very few if any Kerry voters who would. )

professional 'Pollsters' manipulate polls to reflect what their clients want them to say.

You can't go by polls.Go by what you know.The President is on his J O B and don't you let rigged numbers make you feel any different. They chose a certain demographic,and then take numbers. If you were to poll in a teabagging district then you will get low numbers. And when they do their polls do they call you? you have to survey a selective group of democrats and republicans equally. That does not happen. Gallup has already said they pick 2/3 republicans, because unlike Democrats they vote. And that's what they want people who vote. So right there the republicans have a leg up. And just think if they pick more republicans and Obama gets those right marks what does it tell you. And besides a lot of people lie on the polls. TEA BAGS ARE MORE INTELLIGENT GIVE ME A BREAK.
