John Cornyn warns Charlie Crist on indy bid

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is warning Florida Gov. Charlie Crist not to pursue a Senate bid as an independent, saying that the National Republican Senatorial Committee would work to defeat him if he abandoned the Republican label.

The Cornyn threat represents a stark turnabout for the NRSC, which aggressively tried to recruit Crist last year before he faced a fierce conservative primary challenger in former Florida Speaker Marco Rubio. But with Crist now trailing badly in the polls - and rumors intensifying that he will abandon the GOP primary fight - Cornyn says the governor will face an intense backlash from the Republican establishment if he runs as an independent.

"I would think that would be the end of his political career as a Republican," Cornyn, chairman of the NRSC, told POLITICO. "So I doubt that will happen. My hope is that this is all resolved in the Republican primary by Florida voters."

Cornyn said that Crist would be a "man without a party" if he decided to mount a three-way race against Rubio and Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek, who is pursuing his party's nomination in the state.

"And I think he’s got other potential and aspirations, so I think from that standpoint, it would be a bad decision," Cornyn said.

1. I was expecting something like this.. The GOPers are freaking..
because an Independent Senator Crist seriously changes the dynamics in Florida for Nov 2010 and could ultimately affect the GE in 2012.

5. I thnk its a done deal.. the numbers give him no other choice.
If he runs as an "R" he gets slaughtered.. If he runs as an "I", he likely wins.

2. Well, end of a career as a Rethug and losing a primary or end of the career as a Rethug and winning
the general election for the Senate? I think I know what I would do.

If I were Crist I would be out there getting petitions signed today.

I can just see the attack commercials from the Dem's if Crist was ever to run for president.

Crist can't even stand up to John Cornyn, what makes you think he could stand up to Putin.

17. the likely dem candidate is Alex Sink. the likely repub is Bill McCullum
she is state CFO. he is attorney general. She is great. He is an asshole of the first order who was one of the congressional house managers for the Clinton impeachment.

I don't know if Crist can jump back in that race, but he'd probably face many of the same teabag primary problems against McCullum, although not as strongly.

20. Alex Sink is awesome...
she really needs to appeal to the grassroots efforts to allow local school boards more control and get rid of Jebbie's influence in this state. Expose the corrupt network which exists and bring this state BACK to the ideals of Gov. Chiles.

12. Oh fuck him, that does it...
I'm definitely going to switch over to an 'R' for this primary vote for Crist. And if he runs as an I, I'll vote for him too. Meeks is a nice person but his campaign is just too weak and we Crist can carry the moderates well enough to defeat Jeb's continued influence in this state.

Of course I may have to bleach my hands after pulling the lever for an 'R'...

19. Good for you!
I'm reading about a lot of folks who are going to make the switch to also vote out every single R who voted for this bill. It's amazing how well the grass-roots efforts on Facebook and local word of mouth helped in this effort to kill the bill!

24. Connie Mack bails on Crist. I think this "indendent" bid is on the way.
Connie Mack Hits the Eject Button, Departs Crist's Campaign

Hmmmm.

Gov. Charlie Crist's political mentor, former U.S. Sen. Connie Mack, resigned Thursday as Crist's campaign chairman in his race for the U.S. Senate.

Mack wrote a terse, two-paragraph letter to his one-time protege that said Crist was wrong to veto a bill (SB 6) that would have made it easier to fire teachers and tie their pay to student test scores.

"As you know, I strongly disagree with your veto," Mack wrote his fellow Republican. "Your veto I believe undermines our education system in Florida and the principles for which I have always stood."

Mack went on to say that Crist's decision to veto the bill was "unsupportable and wrong."

"As you can understand, I can no longer serve as chairman for your campaign for the United States Senate," Mack wrote.

If a sudden switch to an independent bid is coming down the pike, it would be preceded by the departure of every Republican who couldn't endorse that move, no?
