Arguing with a birther: "why has the certificate number been removed?"
I am trying to get a good answer.

Seriously, I believe this is to protect against identity fraud?

2. To paraphrase Will Rogers
There's two theories to arguing with a birther. Neither one works.

however, if this birther was a McCain supporter, you might remind him/her that McCain was not actually even BORN on American soil......

Good luck.

5. Give them this link from factcheck.org. The birth certificate does indeed have a number.
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 02:44 PM by flpoljunkie
There is much more detailed documentation at the link below, as well. You can also enlarge the birth certificate.

6. Does anyone think Obama had friends in D.C that would cover for him?
If Obama wasn't legit, the Repukes and Hillary would have exposed that a long time ago. My brothers a birther too. I laugh at him. It's all you can do. Do they really think it would be that simple?

12. There would have been issues
the first time he applied for a passport. And remember when his Passport files were compromised? Nothing came of that.

Even my very conservative RW cousin gives props to Obama for making these people look like fools. He wouldn't release anything more either if he were Obama.

7. Better to ask him how in the world were they able to get the birth announcment
published in two Hawaiian papers when they were sitting in Africa.

In the 1960's that would have been quite an achievement, and given the fact that his mom could have gone to Hawaii and had him delivered there why in the world would she go to Africa to have a child?

And where is there a picture of her ever going to Africa?

16. Likely birther reply - it was the grandparents, who wanted their friends to think their grandson was
born in Hawaii. No pictures in Africa - the Obama hid all their private photos and she was not a public figure. (But, a clue that Republicans don't really believe it - unlike in 1992, I never heard they looked into his mom's passport file.)

That's basic protection from identity theft.

15. Believe it or, I won the debate
I forwarded the photos showing the certificate number and also linked to a Google search on this number.

Of course that was after the verbal discussion.

I did some research and voila.

Issue is there are a lot of folks who take these arguments at face value and don't even look up online by themselves.

I have asked several people to show me where in the HCR bill there was a "government takeover" and so far no one has come back with the excerpt.

Or the answer is "there are things in the law that are not printed in the bill" (!?!?!)

Complete ignorance of how the system works.

Or about Obama's "Czars".

"Oh you mean the executive branch of the government composed of the President and his cabinet? Calling them 'czars' is a Republican tradition, as initiated by Nixon and lately pursued by Bush. We call them members of the cabinet."

"But, but, but, Glenn Beck said..."

Oh sweet lord.

26. That is a major problem. Most of Windbag and Beck listeners take their word as gospel.
Ask your friend why Windbag and Beck keep lying about facts? Immediately tell him it is because they know most of their listeners are not going to do the research to confirm it. They rely on their listeners being stupid enough to accept their word.

28. Minor quibble about the "czars"
I also thought Nixon had initiated them, but according to Wikipedia, Woodrow Wilson appointed the first czar as head of the War Industry Board during WWI. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czar_%28political_term%29#Development_of_term

The interesting thing is that until GWB, there were few appointees who got the title "czar" - after WWII, generally less than ten during each administration. GWB had 35 czars, but appointed 47 different people to the posts. Obama has increased the number of "czars" to 38, but have only appointed 8 people - the rest are held over from GWB. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._executive_branch_czars

I got idiot family members who swear up and down that Obama was born in Kenya.

Nothing you can say or do will change their minds. Absolutely nothing.

But these are the same idiots who worship the ground Palin walks on because she's "filled with the Holy Spirit"...

25. The Obama campaign was moving quickly to quash rumors his middle name was Hussein Mohammed
They had called the Hawaii DOH and asked if there was any privacy significance to the certificate number. They released the document to DailyKos prior to receiving an answer from the Hawaii DOH.

When Factcheck.org followed up later, they photographed the document complete without anything being redacted:

http://factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html

I got this from somebody who was working in the Obama campaign HQ at the time.

34. Don't Bother....
Do you really think that it will make a difference? If it's not the lack of an ID number (which there isn't, as shown upthread) then it's going to be some other ridiculous non-issue.

These people are unreconstructed racists and will never EVER accept that a black man is the President of the United States.

There's no arguing with them, and there's certainly no persuading them.

35. You can't effective argue with a birther. Since their original premise was not based on fact,
they will not let facts influence their opinions or beliefs. You are simply wasting your breath in trying to convince them of something that they don't want to believe.
