"To me, Obama is nothing but a terrorist...period."
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 12:14 AM by Catherine Vincent
"To me, Obama is nothing but a terrorist...period. I still do not understand why people voted for him...I really honestly cannot."

Oh dear lord. How do I respond to someone that posts crap like that? I'm speechless. How should I respond?

Btw, this is from a non-political board and I really don't want to debate with her on this because I'm afraid I will learn that this person is dumber than a box of rocks.

1. My response: "To me, you're nothing but a moron...period."
OK, not the most productive response, but the ensuing flame war would be fun...

4. Why respond at all?
Seriously. What could you possibly post on a message board that would change that person's point of view?

Save your energy for the battles that matter.

5. Ask questions
Non-confrontational, inquisitive. Try to get the person to think without confronting them. And let us know what they say when you ask what terrorist attacks he's orchestrated.

6. I'm with you.
It's tempting to take offense and slam back with another anger-inducing bit of snark.
While it's certainly possible that getting the person to think will prove fruitless; it's certain that insulting them will not help them understand.

11. This technique works! At least for entertainment purposes.
Here's what happened when I tried it... Just asked her a couple questions, asked her to go into more detail...

Sounds like a waste of time to even worry about it.

10. So you think stuff like this is kept secret? Jeez, this is the internet
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 01:34 AM by saracat
everything everyone posts is everywhere whether you agree with it or not. All of our stuff turns up everywhere.Their stuff is here, our stuff is there. And nothing anyone post or does not post makes a damn bit of difference. People discuss EVERYTHING, good and bad.I am sorry it makes you tired. I am one of those that argues for more information, not less. I actually want to know more about the crazies because if we don't know what they are doing, we can't stop them. I am truly scared for the Dem congress critters in my state , all of whom have received death threats and been subject to vandalism.Yet somehow, in a state with over 40 hate groups it, it doesn't seem to be taken seriously and isn't major news.

I think she already showed you that she is. There isn't anything else you need to know.

At least a box of rocks knows enough to contain itself.

13. I can't imagine what these fools think they are talking about.
Obama a terrorist? Really? The mind boggles at the level of ignorance, fear, and hate in these people, as they parrot the meaningless, false crap they hear on Fox "News". At least she seems aware, perhaps even proud, of her own cluelessness: "I still do not understand why people voted for him."

(Although, to be honest, I still do not understand why anyone voted for bush in 2004...I really honestly cannot.)

14. You should look amused and remind her that she's talking about the
majority of her fellow Americans. Then ask her if she honestly thinks she's vastly smarter than most Americans? Then ask her questions that make her expound on what she claims to know. It won't be long before she realizes she doesn't know much of anything that could back up her opinion. She'll feel like a fool. Rightfully so.

In other words give her all the rope she wants and watch her hang herself with it.

15. This person is just ignorant
That's how I explain these wackos to young folks. My daughter's boyfriend (20 yr old) and I had a conversation last night and he was asking me political questions about things he had been told by one of these wackos. I told him the person who he was listening to was ignorant of the facts. When someone makes blatant statements without backing them up with fact, ninety-nine percent of the time, they are false. I debunked every falsehood he brought forth (thanks DU), and explained to him it is his responsibility to question every thing these people say, and insist they back it up with facts.....then check their facts, because they are probably misinformed. Most people aren't as knowledgable as those of us who follow politics on a daily basis. They may listen to a Limbaugh or a Beck or quote Faux News, and are just passing along what they hear. And, a lot of them truly believe what they are told, because that is what they want to hear. Since these people don't research anything, they are just ignorant. They aren't necessarily bad people, just ignorant.
I see people who are successful, seemingly smart people, spreading these lies. Young folks tend to believe them because of their success in life. I really think they think they are doing their part for their party by spreading the propoganda, regardless of the harm it is doing to the country. And that makes them......ignorant.

16. don't debate, ask her to explain
"why do you think that?"

you will likely get the usually generalized nonsense about socialism and trying to destroy the country.

then you ask the question again: "what makes you think that? do you have any examples of actions that show that? I'd really like to know about it, if this is happening."

if they do get more specific, you get specific.

ie. "the health care bill is a government take over of health care," then you say, "well, that's not true, it simply sets some rules for health insurance companies so that they can't deny coverage for people who paid for it. do you oppose that?" and ask another question: "How do you think it takes over healthcare? Do you have any reasons for thinking that?"

at some point they will probably get all flustered and pissed off and throw the old "you liberals are so arrogant" or "you liberals won't listen to any other point of view" cop out and thats the end of the discussion.

its unlikely, but maybe, just maybe, you'll have planted the tiniest seed of doubt about her source of information and whether or not she can believe it.

18. Ask for specifics
Republicans rely on generalizations and blanket statements. When you start digging for details, they come up empty.

...specifically you are referring to when you label President Obama a terrorist?

It's no good just throwing the name around. Anyone can do that. I could say that your friend is an idiot, but I don't have any facts to back it up. Well, I do have a couple of facts that point in that direction, based on your original post, but still.

Tens of thousands of people were killed in Iraq over 5 years, because of a war over lies and phantom WMD that didn't exist in 2002. I do not understand why people voted for him in 2004. I really honestly cannot.
