White House Talking Points Rip GOP As Puppet Of Wall Street
White House Talking Points Rip GOP As Puppet Of Wall Street

The White House, girding for its final push, is circulating a new set of talking points on the Hill and to outside allies that makes it official: The terminology is now “Wall Street reform.”

The talking points also instruct users to make an aggressive case that Republican claims to bipartisanship are bogus, using the Frank Luntz memo to argue that Wall Street is dictating the GOP position:

As is the case with most major reforms, the special interests and lobbyists that stand to profit from the status quo, as well as their allies in Washington, are fighting to block or weaken this bill. We’ve seen Republican leadership meet with Wall Street executives to discuss ways to block progress on this important issue. And the Senate Republican Leader has taken to using talking points drafted by a pollster with Wall Street clients to say that these reforms will enable future bailouts.

This is designed to rebut Mitch McConnell’s frequent claims of late that Republicans have done everything in their power to cooperate with Dems to reach a compromise on the legislation. The talking points pair this harsh attack on Republicans with a claim that the President is still committed to working with them if they operate in good faith:

The President hopes that politics can be put aside for the good of the American people, and that Democrats and Republicans can find common ground and move forward together. But no matter what, we will move forward. We will hold Wall Street accountable and we will protect and empower consumers in our financial system and end taxpayer bailouts once and for all.

At this side, it’s unclear which side, if any, is bluffing. With Obama set to journey to New York and challenge Wall Street on its own turf, the White House and Dems don’t appear to be backing off their dare that the GOP vote against reform. And Republicans appear to believe Dems aren’t willing to let the legislation go down, giving the GOP a chance to ring more concessions out of it.
