Oops! Conservative Latinos Rethink Party Ties
Conservative Latinos Rethink Party Ties

By MIRIAM JORDAN

Adam Bustos, a third-generation Mexican-American, has voted Republican since Ronald Reagan ran for president. But he has been reconsidering his party affiliation since Arizona State Gov. Jan Brewer signed the nation's toughest immigration law last month.

"I've been thinking I might leave the party," said Mr. Bustos, a 58-year-old Arizona native. "A lot of my Latino Republican friends have been talking about it after this law."

The new Arizona law requires police to question people whom they suspect are in the U.S. illegally. Supporters say the law is necessary to combat rampant illegal border crossings. Opponents say it can't be enforced without violating civil liberties.

Many Hispanic-Americans say they feel stung by a law they allege invites racial profiling, incites hatred and discriminates against all Latinos.

The law in Arizona was passed by a Republican legislature and signed by a GOP governor. Republican lawmakers in Texas, Utah and several other states have said they would consider introducing laws similar to the one passed in Arizona.

Conservative Hispanic voters, in particular, say they feel betrayed by Republican Party leaders who have supported the law.

1. Hell, I had dinner with an 88 year old lifelong Republicon last night
And he was in a state of Deep Regret about what has become of the Republicon party -- the borrow-and-spend profligacy of the Bush years, the lies, the moral turpitude, the lack of ideas, the shallowness, and the hate and divisiveness of the modern republicons all caused him great sorrow.

This is a solid retired professional country-club guy from the Heartland -- and I imagine his views are representative of many people.

The republicons have screwed the pooch with their strategies of greed, hate, division, tearing down, cowardice, and hypocrisy.

And just about everyone of intelligence knows it.

2. Thanks for sharing; it's nice to know there are still
some rethugs who actually recognize how low their party has sunk. Teabaggers get the majority of coverage when we really need to hear more from folks like your friend, who do make up the actual majority.

11. Yes, we do need to hear from the moderate
repubs but that's not in the corporatemedia's best interests, evidently. Too real for them.

3. I have never understand the allure the GOP apparently has for Latinos anyway...
... I understand it with Cuban Americans. The GOP was obviously the most ardent enemies of communism in the 70s and 80s.

But why EVERYONE else in the community has been more apt to vote Republican is puzzling. Not that I think a person's political affiliation should be linked to their ethnicity, but let's be honest, the Grand Old white man Party has, in recent memory at least, only been interested in the "rights" of their own.

5. Religion? Many Latinos are diehard Catholics. Of course, the Rethugs
have never really liked Catholics. They just happen to be the party of pro-life.

6. Joe Biden? The Kennedys?
... you may be on to something with the pro-life thing.

I'd be interested to know what the breakdown of the religious affiliation of Catholics was.

7. Catholics are usally in the Dem party.
Pelosi is a Catholic as well.
But with Latinos, many are very pro-life and that could have led them to the Repubs. However, I think we will see more and more turn to the Dems or just become independents.

I remember an article being written during the nomination process of Justice Sotomayor, where a right wing Latino man was trying to convince other Latinos to stay with or vote for republicans. He made a comment saying Latinos should be different from blacks and have "open minds" by voting with republicans. Now that the repukes have put out this horrible law, I'd love to know what his thinking now.

4. It's sad that they only understand it when the gop attacks them on such a blatant
and personal level.

8. When they lose the conservative latino vote, they've lost everything.
The conservative latino vote is attracted to the Republican principles because of the business aspect of their philosophy. However, they are far more connected to other latinos of all social incomes through family and community ties, than rich, white Americans are connected to theirs. It's this connection that helps draw the vote to the Republicans when the conservative latinos lead the way. But when the conservative latinos go the other way, the rest of the community will do the same.

9. I never understood the small business people that stand by the republicon brand
For as long as I can remember the republicons have been very anti small business and have always sided with to big to fail big business. Republicons have always been tax breaks for big business while raising taxes on small business. When it came time to prevent big business from taking over small business to create monopolies, the republicon sided with big business every time, look at Wal Mart for example and what they managed to get away with since the 80's.

Yet year after year small business people have supported the very people that have let big business run over them. I talked to a guy who owned a small business since 1950, he seen his business go from providing a comfortable living in the 50's and early 60's to scrimping by from 1970 to the 1990's when he finally gave up and closed his doors. Yet every time he bitched when Dems were in control, even though his taxes went down when they were in control and there was a disconnect when pubes were in power. The only reason I could see for his reasoning was he was a closet racist, he felt that LBJ was wrong for signing the civil rights bill, his business started failing right after the bill was signed into law, so maybe that was why he felt the way he did.
