Dems: Cantor’s Speech Shows He Wants Obama To Fail On National Security

This blog has repeatedly insisted that Congressional Dems need to defend Obama’s record on terrorism more forcefully, lest they cede the debate to the GOP, and now they are hitting back hard at Eric Cantor’s speech criticizing Obama on national security.

The House Dem leadership is set to go out with a response that makes the pointed charge that Cantor’s speech shows he wants Obama to fail on national security. The response points out that Cantor gave his speech on the same day the Times Square bomb suspect’s apprehension was announced, proving the success of Obama’s approach to terror:

This timely awareness and cooperation resulted in a quick and appropriate response Saturday night, and combined with a sophisticated and aggressive investigation, led to a swift arrest shortly thereafter. The Obama administration, and state and local law enforcement authorities understand the nature of terrorist threats and are working tirelessly to defeat them. In Congress, House Democrats have provided state-of-the-art resources, tools, and authority to wage this fight against terrorism and we will continue to do so in the future.

Unfortunately, Republican Whip Eric Cantor chose to deliver a speech on national security today that was short on substance and heavy on politically charged rhetoric. In the midst of this failed terror plot and active and so far successful investigation, and while hundreds of thousands of American troops are fighting two wars, all Americans expect their elected leaders to remember that national security is about action, not just words. While it appears Mr. Cantor is rooting for the president to fail, he also has a record of voting repeatedly against both resources and authority for our counter-terrorism and law enforcement efforts.

In his speech, Cantor did praise Obama for some successes, though he also called them the “exception, rather than the rule.” The speech had previously been scheduled for today.

The Dem response here, of course, is of a piece with the larger Dem strategy of accusing Republicans of wanting Obama to fail on multiple fronts, particularly domestic issues such as the economy and health care. But the charge that Cantor wants Obama to fail on national security seems particularly pointed: Though the Dem response doesn’t explicitly say this, failure on this front could mean anything from letting a terror suspect escape to failing to prevent a terror attack.

2. Better late than never
But I can't help but wonder how things would look for November if we'd been batting down this bullshit from day 1.

4. We would fall over if a repub gave
a speech on substance and wasn't full of self serving lies.

The whole Dem response is definetly worth reading..and here's a little background check on cantor..

"Background:

In this Congress alone, Rep. Cantor has voted against the:

American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, which provided more than $3 billion for homeland security projects, including for border and port security, screening checked baggage, and for checkpoint explosives detection technologies; and $4 billion to support state and local law enforcement with equipment and operating costs, and to hire about 13,000 new police officers for three years. (signed into law Feb 17, 2009 – House Roll Call Vote 70)

Intelligence Authorization, which will strengthen our intelligence community’s capabilities and increase our security. (Feb 26, 2010 – House Roll Call Vote 73)

Defense Authorization FY2010, which provided for investments in resources that keep Americans safe, support our service members, protect our national interests. (conf report Oct 8, 2009 – House Roll Call Vote 770)

Homeland Security Appropriations FY2010, which made investments in our national security priorities including protecting our borders, supporting our first responders, and securing our ports and airports. (conf report Oct 15, 2009 – House Roll Call Vote 784)

Supplemental Appropriations Conference Report, which supported our troops in Iraq and increased resources to Afghanistan and Pakistan. (conf report Jun 16, 2009 – House Roll Call Vote 348)"

8. I like Vic Snyder's response to the cantor blather..
"Rep. Vic Snyder (AR-2), Member of the House Armed Services Committee: “President Obama’s recognition that a secure America depends on all aspects of power, not just the military, is a vital contribution to our foreign policy. The American people are not impressed during these challenging times of our nation at war by simplistic jingoism as demonstrated by the Republican Whip.”
