Brunner signals support for Fisher
Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has told top Ohio Democrats she will back Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher’s campaign for Senate, despite previous signals that she might withhold her support, Gov. Ted Strickland told POLITICO Thursday.

The governor said Fisher, who won Tuesday’s rancorous contest by 10 points, attended a lunch with Brunner and other statewide officeholders Wednesday, where the formal rivals spoke warmly about each other.

“Lee and Jennifer both talked privately before the lunch and indicated during the lunch that they were supportive of each other. Jennifer was very gracious in her comments to Lee,” Strickland said in an interview.

Late last week, when asked by a local reporter how much she would work for Fisher if he won, Brunner held up her hand and formed a zero. At a debate in mid-April when Fisher asked her if he could count on her support, she chided him for not using her title.

1. That was probably just campaign rhetoric
to keep her supporters motivated in the primary.

In the 2004 and 2008 election cycles I remember Howard Dean, Al Sharpton and Dennis Kucinich making similar statements, but they always fell into line after a few days of cooling off.

2. That was gracious of her.
I'm sorry she lost, but Ohio still has a superb SOS!

And that is something really terrific...

3. much ado about nothing
Jennifer Brunner was always going to "support" him. She won't campaign or "work" for him because she is Secretary of State. She oversees elections and wants those elections to run with integrity. She didn't "work" for candidates in '08 either. She saw the complete conflict of interest under Ken Blackwell in '04 as a Bush campaign leader and the supposed executive in charge of fair elections.

She is a good person, and a good Dem... of course she was always going to "support" him. she has encouraged her supporters to support him and all Dems. But, any support will probably be modest as it should. I don't expect her to stump for him or work for his campaign while she is sitting SOS. That just isn't her MO.
