Obama oil response: aggressive as crisis unfolded

By H. JOSEF HEBERT and ERICA WERNER (AP) – 7 hours ago

WASHINGTON — It was a two-day trip to the Midwest to talk about jobs and clean energy. President Barack Obama didn't mention the drama unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico, where oil was gushing from a broken well pipe a mile beneath the sea.

The situation hadn't become a priority. Soon it would.

On the return to Washington aboard Air Force One, Obama learned the spill had become more worrisome. A third break was discovered at the destroyed well pipe on the ocean floor 40 miles from Louisiana's precious coastal marshes. Federal scientists believed at least 5,000 barrels of oil a day were being released — five times more than original estimates.

And there was no way to stop the flow.

The Gulf region, ravaged five years earlier by Hurricane Katrina, was on the verge of a second ecological disaster. Would there be a repeat of the bureaucratic bungling that marked President George W. Bush's response to the hurricane?

While the Obama administration has faced second-guessing about the speed and effectiveness of some of its actions, a narrative pieced together by The Associated Press, based on documents, interviews and public statements, shows little resemblance to Katrina in either the characterization of the threat or the federal government's response.

On April 20, an explosion engulfed the floating BP oil rig in fire, toppling it into the sea and sending 126 workers fleeing. Eleven never made it and are presumed dead.

20. Not one even modestly intelligent person believed this mess anyway
Only fools and their followers tried to take an oil spill and turn it into "Obama's Katrina."

The comparisons to Katrina were ridiculous and didn't stick.

19. we would have been well along in development of alternative sources, and without the current leak
--see, when Dean rolls up his sleeves and gives a fiery speech, he MEANS it. He isn't just mouthing some eloquent words that satisfy his paymasters and string-pullers and placate the masses.

The MMS would have been kicked to the curb and staffed with responsible people who weren't taking bribes and schoozing with Big Energy.

What might have been will never be, because only corporate profits mean anything in this country, and corporate profits above all else will kill the entire planet. Dean is truly Of The People, and that can never be.

As far as how he's handled it, the reaction has been good. Anyone calling it Obama's Katrina is a numbnuts who needs to be smacked on the nose with a rolled up magazine. The reaction of his compared to Bush eating cake while N.O. drowned says it all.

18. so, who should be blamed for that exemption? Obama is the ultimate head of MMS
it is HIS agency. In fact, HIS agency has granted at least 27 more exemptions SINCE the leak started. We can assume that drilling will continue unabated as soon as a bandaid is put over the current mess, an eloquent speech is made, and the herd has "moved on" to some new scandal or bullshit while the oceans die.

22. Did the government have a responsibility
Edited on Sun May-09-10 05:40 AM by jeanpalmer
to supervise BP and other drillers to make sure they follow accepted procedures? For example, it appears BP might not have installed a shut-off valve which could have prevented the spill. Wouldn't the government be at fault for not ensuring that BP installs the valve? I think so. Before any drilling, there ought to be an agreement between the government and the driller that certain things will be done, like installing a shut off valve. And beyond that, there should be a government official on the scene at all times to make sure the driller complies with these requirements. So I also hold the government responsible for the failure of supervision. Who's the CEO of the government?

An oil spill doesn't happen without a mistake being made. A mistake of judgment or a mistake in implementation/supervision. BP undoubtedly made a mistake, but the government did also. And when the government makes a mistake, the guy at the top has to step forward and take responsibility for it, with prmoises to correct it. At the recent hearings on the Wall St. meltdown, you didn't see the banks' traders, CDS writers, MBS sales people testifying/being blamed. The CEO's were being blamed, or being held accountable. Same principle applies to government.

27. Choosing someone for Interior Secy with a history of
coziness with Big Oil, in addition to a very poor environmental track record was something Obama did; I believe DU criticized that choice; where does the buck stop?

And why did Obama nominate BP for a safety award?

and why are you putting words in my mouth that I did not state?

21. and at least 27 more exemptions have been granted SINCE the leak
in addition, Obama is only "thinking about" whether he will "reconsider" drilling.
For most it is a no-brainer that we should move beyond oil, but apparently for Obama it is not so obvious. Apparently there is some case to be made for destroying the environment to get a few more years of oil, a finite resource that will eventually run out. They say lack of foresight is the hallmark of stupidity . . . if I hadn't lost all respect after seeing the sell-out to health insurance co's, the duplicitous lies about a public option and total lack of consideration of universal single-payer, this issue would be the last straw. But my last straw occurred several months ago.

23. If the government allows offshore drilling
it should have an effective plan in place to deal with this kind of accident. Obviously, it had no effective plan. To me, the response looked disorganized, which is to be expected if there was no plan for it. In place of an effective organized response, the government is trying to project the image of an organzided response by showing pictures of people meeting with this person or that person, as if something other than mere talking is being accomplished. It isn't. The oil is still flowing, and almost all of it is still spreading toward the coast.

It's amazing that the 4-story shell they have lowered to cover the leak had to be built after the spill started. Wouldn't a device like that be something that would already be in place as part of an overall contingency plan to handle oil spills? The prior planning for combatting oil spills looks to be a giant clusterfuck where little was done by BP or the government.

28. +1000
apparently one of the additional exemptions BP received was from the requirement that it develop an emergency response plan to deal with just this type of event. When asked what their plan was, they drew a blank. The horrifying reality is there is no plan and they are trying to formulate one now, while the catastrophe unfolds. This is all apparently uncharted technology/maneuvers.

30. I hope that he changes his mind about his offshore drilling plans
Edited on Sun May-09-10 02:50 PM by IndianaGreen
Gee, I hope that he changes his mind about his offshore drilling plans now that we about to lose the entire Gulf coast to the biggest environmental catastrophe since that asteroid hit the Yucatan Peninsula!

Obama to unveil offshore drilling plans for oil, natural gas

The proposal through 2017 will open new areas of the mid-Atlantic region, Alaska and the eastern Gulf of Mexico for production but prohibit moves off California, Oregon and Washington.

By Jim Tankersley

March 31, 2010

Reporting from Washington

President Obama will announce new plans to drill for oil and natural gas off America's coasts Wednesday but will rule out drilling off California, Oregon and Washington state through 2017, administration officials say.

Obama's plans will include opening new areas of coastal Virginia and other parts of the mid-Atlantic region, Alaska and the eastern Gulf of Mexico for drilling. But officials say the president will block drilling in Alaska's Bristol Bay, where the George W. Bush administration's drilling plans in 2007 angered environmentalists.

This is a disaster caused by human hubris and folly! We need to move away from fossil fuels, not continue to feed our appetite for oil.

31. This is not Katrina, nor anything like it!
Bush fumbled the response to Katrina.

The US Army Corps of Engineers failed the people by building a fatally flawed system of dikes, unlike Norway.

The oil gusher is catastrophic when compared to Katrina, its effects long lasting and widespread.

Obama has done all he can do, but he can't cap that well. Obama can backtrack on his offshore drilling proposal from March 31, but BP can't undo the damage that it has caused!
