Bennett Won't Appear On Senate Ballot
Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT) has lost the battle for a fourth term in office after delegates to the UT GOP convention refused to renominate him on Saturday, a highly-placed source with knowledge of the vote count tells Hotline OnCall.

Instead, GOPers will choose between attorney Mike Lee (R) and business consultant Tim Bridgewater (R), who will advance to a third ballot. If neither candidate receives 60% of the vote, they will face off in a June 22 primary.

On the first ballot, Lee led with 28.75%, followed by Bridgewater's 26.84%. Bennett finished third, with 25.91%. The remaining vote split among candidates who have openly opposed Bennett, making any comeback attempt a longshot to begin with.

Bennett, the 3-term incumbent with a largely conservative record, is the first victim of an angry GOP primary electorate, which is upset with his votes over TARP legislation and his work with Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) to try and forge a health care consensus. He had been targeted by the conservative Club for Growth, which did not back a specific rival but urged delegates to vote against the incumbent.

1. Republicans are in trouble.
That's what they get for feeding the rabid right.

Sen. Bob Bennett Loses Re-Nomination At Utah GOP Convention
Eric Kleefeld | May 8, 2010, 5:34PM

Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT) has lost at his state Republican convention -- officially defeating him for re-nomination without a primary. He is the first incumbent Senator to lose re-election in 2010, a Republican driven from office by the anti-establishment conservative insurgency.

The results of the second ballot, courtesy of the Salt Lake Tribune: Businessman Tim Bridgewater 37%, attorney Mike Lee 36%, and the incumbent Sen. Bennett 27%. There will now be a final round of voting pitting Bridgewater against Lee, to see if one of them can get 60% of the vote and thus be nominated outright. If neither receives 60% of the delegate vote, the race will go to a primary on June 22.

It should of course be noted that Utah is one of the most conservative, Republican-friendly states in the nation. The last time it voted Democratic for president was in the 1964 Lyndon Johnson landslide; the last time it elected a Democratic Senator was 1970; and it voted for John McCain in 2008 by a margin of 63%-34%. So with that said, the eventual GOP nominee will be heavily favored to keep the seat in Republican hands.

7. Maybe it's time for the Dems
to divide and conquer. The right is narrow-minded. Look at the tough spot Rubio found himself in regarding the Arizona law.

The RW positions are atrocious.

6. Even an introduction by Mitt Romney could not save him!
And, Romney's favorability in Utah is 79%.

9. Maybe he shouldn't have voted in lock step with the Republicans against
every Democratic bill. Not that it would have helped him with the teabaggers, but at least he would have earned a little respect from rational people.

10. "Of course Bennett may not really be out ..."
UT-Sen: Bennett Is Out

It's official:

Utah Sen. Bob Bennett lost his bid to be nominated for a fourth term Saturday, defeated at the state Republican Party convention by a strong conservative sentiment that threatens to unseat other establishment-backed GOPers in the months to come. <...>

Under convention rules, all eight candidates appeared on the first ballot. The top three -- attorney Mike Lee, former Congressional candidate Tim Bridgewater and Bennett (in that order) advanced to the second round of balloting.

Bennett was defeated there as Lee, a former counsel to popular former Gov. Jon Huntsman, and Bridgewater who had lost two races against Rep. Jim Matheson (D), advanced to the final ballot.

Of course Bennett may not really be out ...

11. We are witnessing the disintegration of the GOP...
it's been going on for quite some time...but it's picking up the pace now.

Not all rank and file Republicans are evil bastards, and they see what has happened to their party...I'm willing to bet, this Mid-term is the death knell of the GOP. They've gone too far to the right, and are looking like some kind of neo-nazi baboons at this point...and honest R's don't sit well with the nazi wing...:D
