""Jobs" Drops to No. 2 on Americans' List of Top Problems"
"Jobs" Drops to No. 2 on Americans' List of Top Problems

PRINCETON, NJ -- After two months as the clear No. 1 perceived problem facing the country, unemployment/jobs dipped to No. 2 in May, while "the economy" in general moved back into the top position. At the same time, Americans grew more likely to name immigration (including illegal immigration) as the nation's most important problem, moving that issue into fifth place.

Gallup measures public perceptions of the nation's most important problem every month. The 10% citing immigration or illegal immigration in the latest poll, conducted May 3-6, is the highest Gallup has recorded in more than two years. Mentions of immigration last reached double digits in January 2008, and peaked at 19% in April 2006.

1. Good news! Reality is sinking in...
slowly but surely. Immigration is up five-fold but only to 10%. That's interesting since Durbin said today no immigration reform package likely this year.

3. ...Aren't Jobs and the Economy basically the same thing?
This is basically saying the economy has overtaken the economy as the #1 issue to Americans.

4. Heh. I forget who said it first...
...but the line was something like "Ever notice there's a 'business' section in the newspaper, but no 'labor' section?" :D

5. The economy to the average joe might be things like the stock market and housing values I'd guess.

7. I thought that as well but...
.... apparently the Gallup folks have been asking that question over time. Aside from a trivial blip (as with the Reid poll I just posted) the only value I get from polls is if they're done over time ... or several polls averaged together. Obviously a poll is only as good as the questions asked in it and to whom it's asked.

But since Gallup has been comparing the two things for quite some time, this shift is noteworthy.

8. I'm amazed that immigration issues has suddenly rocketed to 10%
I mean, really. 10% of Americans think immigration is THE most important issue right now?

10. I think that is more about it being in the news a lot recently
the amount of coverage a story get effects people perception of its importance.

11. Proof propaganda works, works big time. It is beyond delusional to think immigration
is a major issue right now.

14. I think that is highly doubtful
given the largest American corporations' plans to continue offshoring jobs.

Everything points to continued economic polarization in this country - the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer and the disappearance of the middle class.

Yes, the economy may look like its roaring again at some point but that will just be for the super wealthy - much like the past year's Wall Street rally. Yup, there really are two Americas.

15. There are two America's in every country in the world

Every democratic country, without exception, has a very rich class.
Even Europe, which has much more progressive taxation has a extremely rich class.
The rest of Europeans mostly live in apartments. I was just there a year ago and
did extensive travel including cities in Spain, Italy, Portugal & France. The rich
folks have huge estates. You should see some of the properties in the French Riviera.
The guide showed us one property which sold for $500 Million 2 years ago.
But most folks mostly live from paycheck to paycheck.

Even in so called communist countries, there is the elite class who get to live
a privileged life and then there are the working people toiling away.
