Biden hosts recovering son's fundraiser
By Eric Zimmermann - 05/15/10 02:21 PM ET

Vice President Joe Biden hosted a fundraiser this afternoon for his son, whose still in the hospital recovering from a mild stroke.

The VP gathered about 150 people at his home in Greenville, Del., today to raise money for his son's re-election bid as Delaware Attorney General.

Though Beau Biden was unable to make the fundraiser due to his hospitalization, the elder Biden said his son is now "100%."

"I promise you. I give you my word as a Biden: He’s doing well. The doctor said he’s 100 percent now. Everything is squared away. Thank God for big favors," Biden told the crowd, according to a pool report.

But Beau wasn't totally absent from the soiree. He addressed the crowd via speakerphone from his hospital room.

“I just wanted to call and let each and every one of you know how much I appreciate your support for me and for the family on so many levels,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting back to work and running for re-election as well.”

1. At first I thought it was a fundraiser for his medical costs
But then I thought: "No, that's something that only the ordinary people have to ever do."

So far, one survived. Makes me mad.

5. It's one of the most bizarre aspects of our dysfunctional society
Begging people for money they cannot afford to give to pay bills you cannot afford to have.

Biden and those in the upper class will never ever know what we're talking about.

9. Biden and family have good government insurance, but last I heard the VP lives on his salary...
... and always has. He's one of the few politicians who came to DC and just did his job. That hardly puts them in the upper class.

11. And the guy doesn't even get it that there's a connection between his son's stroke
And our pointless continuation of an unwinnable war?

I hope the young man recovers fully...but why doesn't his dad get it? He's ok with his kid being affected like this just so we can look "tough"?

13. I'd buy a karmic connection but there is no medical basis for connecting Beau's stroke to the war.

17. Biden Senior has had a couple of Brain Anuerisms. I thought Beau had inherited the condition..
even though they call it a "stroke" ...Beau is quite young to have that condition.

I feel bad that Joe thinks this is a good time for a fundraiser for his son...if his son doesn't need medical bills paid for. Seems kind of "opportunistic." Especially since Joe thinks that Beau will be his political successor.

19. Huh? He was a jag officer and never fought and this could be hereditary.
You know, Joe almost died in 1988 from an aneurysm.

22. That's not "karma." Your pov is more in alignment with a vengeful Jehovah.
Not nice at all. Next will you be smugly approving if something dreadful happens to Sasha or Malia?

24. What I'm saying is that war is all about endangering people's health
And Biden's son is there, in part, because of the feeling that he needs to be there so his dad looks "tough". We've got to take this party through an anti-"toughness" twelve-step program.

I wish the young man a full recovery.

25. I have never gotten that vibe off the Biden family. If his son had not shipped out, would you then
... ask if he had some special dispensation so he didn't have to go? Your line of thinking is lose-lose.

14. How typical of the self righteous
This man who opposes family rights for others, grandstanding with an oath on his family name. A pretty picture indeed.
