Senate passes Financial Reform Bill
Senate passes financial reform bill
Vote represents major policy victory for President Obama
updated 31 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Prodded by national anger at Wall Street, the Senate on Thursday passed the most far-reaching restraints on big banks since the Great Depression. In its broad sweep, the massive bill would touch Wall Street CEOs and first-time home buyers, high-flying traders and small town lenders.

The 59-39 vote represents an important achievement for President Barack Obama, and comes just two months after his health care overhaul became law. The bill must now be reconciled with a House version that passed in December. A key House negotiator predicted the legislation would reach Obama's desk before the Fourth of July.

The legislation aims to prevent a recurrence of the near-meltdown of big Wall Street investment banks and the resulting costly bailouts. It calls for new ways to watch for risks in the financial system and makes it easier to liquidate large failing financial firms. It also writes new rules for complex securities blamed for helping precipitate the 2008 economic crisis, and it creates a new consumer protection agency.

4. Imagine say yesterday or a couple years ago with larger banks
This will result in more direct Fed action so Congress won't be bothered to vote on bailouts going forward, they'll just continue to go out the back door without the scuttlebutt of 08.

Plus, even if they liquidate one it will just be gobbled up by one of the other giants and we'll keep moving toward monopoly. I don't think modifications to the ratings agencies alone will be quite (anywhere near) and maybe some clearer terms on loans is enough to hold back the flood.

Many democrats helped to vote for it even Kerry! They are supposed to protect us ...government of the people, by the people, for the people, but no..it's by the corporations, for the corporations as always ...

This financial reform bill means nothing!

6. wrong. they didn't pass any such amendment
an amendment to limit credit card rates failed to pass.

there is a big difference between passing something horrible and being unable to pass something you would like to have.

8. exactly. an Amendment failed to pass, just like I said
the person I was responding to claimed that the Senate had passed something protecting high credit card rates.

that is just not what happened.

9. Okay, its more accurate to say the Senate refused to protect the American people

against usury. Does that "feel" better?

Unable is like they COULD NOT but the truth is WOULD NOT.

Kerry is starting to suck ass, he voted against ending too big too fail, against drug re-importation, and now against rational protections for consumers from rates that not so long ago were called loansharking and was seen as criminal. Now we have supposed "liberal/progressive Democrats" standing up to protect such criminal activity and predatory practices.
