Poll question: Should we expect our politicians to fulfill their campaign promises?
This poll is about your view of politicians and their campaign promises.

1. If we can't expect them to mean what they say, why should we vote for them? n/t

2. A bit more nuanced, maybe,
but we should at least see them TRYING to fulfill their campaign promises, whether or not they succeed.

4. Yeah, as much as possible, in our constitutional system.
Obviously we work with a federal structure that has three co-equal branches. In most instances, for campaign promises to become reality at least two, if not all three, have to sign off on implementation.

That said, I favor reminding politicians of the platforms they proposed during a campaign, and holding them to work to enact them.

6. I expect them to at least try
and if there is a problem in carrying out their campaign promises I expect a clear explanation.

Not doing so leads to a cynical and suspicious electorate. People disengage and no longer want to participate in the process of selecting and voting for candidates.

8. No, we should first stop demanding unrealistic promises from them
And start calling them out when they make unrealistic promises. Then we should start expecting that they keep their promises

10. What the hell?
If there isn't meaningful campaign finance reform, that'll never happen. Why be honest if you don't need a constituency? Until the corporate board is dissolved that mandates 15% of the popular primary vote to debate, nothing will get solved. I'm not even going to get into the media portion.

11. If the promise ends up being completely stupid - NO I don't think they should act stupidly
Edited on Sun Nov-15-09 06:43 PM by stray cat
just because they didn't know it was stupid 2 years ago. I would like them to actually think!

13. do you know the full story of the job from the interview?
Edited on Sun Nov-15-09 06:57 PM by cleveramerican
Once you arrive at the job,
It is seldom what you expected.
It is often more difficult and complex than you imagined.
Did you ever put your best foot forward in a job interview?
Ever show all your optimism while downplaying your more realistic cynical side?

An election is like a job interview you never see the full scope of an applicant.

14. Oh yes, and doubley so for those who hold religious prejudices
against others based on faiths which teach a strict adherence to the truth.
