Murkowski vote Thursday to strip EPA's rulemaking authority on climate change. Lincoln's backing it.
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 07:00 AM by flpoljunkie
Sen. Lisa Murkowski is seeking votes to block EPA movement on climate and keeping a firm hold on her seat.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is seeking votes this week for her amendment that would block the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from addressing climate change/global warming through rulemaking. Supporters of Murkowski’s measure, which is scheduled to hit the floor on Thursday, contend that Congress, not the EPA, needs to address carbon emissions.

The Obama administration and some Senate Democrats disagree. EPA, through regulatory maneuvers, has sent a clear message to Capitol Hill: Pass climate change, or we will.

That has not sat well with Murkowski, who has 41 backers of her amendment, including three Democrats (Sens. Blanche Lincoln, Ark., Ben Nelson, Neb., and Mary Landrieu, La.).

1. Who are the three Democrats? I don't see any on that list.
:sarcasm:

3. They are Blanche Lincoln, Mary Landrieu, and Ben Nelson - names heard together far too often
against Democratic bills.

I have the full list of sponsors here - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x329986

Mark Beglich looks like he will vote against it. Alaskans here likely should call him as he is very likely going to get targeted mail from the right. This is needed as a fall back if Reid/Schumer do push an energy only bill and has a lever to push some on the fence Senators to vote for the climate change bill (which might end up as an amendment). Murkowski's bill would eliminate the only stick they have - and an energy only bill, which alone might be worse than the status quo, would eliminate all possible carrots. Together this would doom anything but state and regional response on climate change.

5. Landrieu's next- but we'll have to wait a couple of years
She's a real piece of work, an ugly person, corrupt and ever willing to backhand the few friends and allies she might have.

My hope is that there'll be some investigations that force her to resign.

4. a few additional names to lobby for a NO vote : Rockefeller , Dorgan, Conrad, Levin, Collins
http://www.nytimes.com/cwire/2010/06/08/08climatewire-alaska-democrat-wants-to-keep-threat-of-epa-32509.html

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), co-sponsor of a separate effort to block EPA's stationary source regulations for two years, said he "might" vote for Murkowski's measure. Several other Democrats co-sponsoring his bill, including North Dakota Democrats Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad, said they still have not made up their minds.

"I have not reached a conclusion," Conrad said. "I want to hear the debate before I reach a conclusion."

Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) also said they had not decided.

6. Why is it that Murkowski only needs 51 votes to pass this resolution?
Begich has been cited as one of the possible Democratic swing votes Murkowski is seeking in order to reach the 51 votes the resolution needs to pass the Senate. Murkowski has 40 co-sponsors, including three Democrats.

9. I don't know - I hope Kerry filibusters it
I can't imagine there is any reason that it - unlike every Democratic bill - can't be filibustered.

15. Resolution issued under 'little-used Congressional Review Act.' Q. How did that happen?
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 06:25 PM by flpoljunkie
The resolution, issued under the little-used Congressional Review Act, cannot be filibustered, but Murkowski nonetheless faces a tough climb to win a majority vote.

8. Levin obviously learned nothing from having been a force stopping improving CAFE standards in 2000
You would think that he would see that his "protecting" the auto industry, nearly killed it. Dorgan has been absolutely awful on this being a key person pushing for the energy only bill. Any one both adamantly for the energy only bill (which takes all the potential carrots) and this (which takes the only stick) either doesn't believe the science or doesn't care. I don't know which is worse.

10. Unless Thomas is slow to update - neither Conrad or Dorgan are listed as cosponsors
It also would be weird to say they have not made up their minds AND are co-sponsors. I wonder if her sentence got garbled - Maybe she meant "several Democrats, other than those cosponsoring it, including ...."

11. Cosponsoring Rockefeller bill, not Murkowski.
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 09:36 AM by Mass
Anyway, it is no surprise to see ND senators on the wrong side of an environmental issue.
