19. I think your post illustrates a huge problem with perspective for a lot of people...
You called the President of the United States "my guy" as if you had some PERSONAL stake in defending him. You don't, you just don't, he's a politician, and he screws up like all politicians do from time to time. I simply don't understand why reasonable criticism is so upsetting to people. Lies and distortions are one thing, but just not being able to handle "your guy" taking criticism at all, that's simply disturbing.

30. I think the problem in perspective is yours, because I assure you, the GOP think of their candidates
as "theirs". They understand that if you don't treat your incumbents as "yours" and fight for them, the other side will take them away. Plain and simple.

So, it isnt about Obama personally that makes him "My guy". It's much more involved and strategic than that.

"It's complicated". Just like in college when I had to have a friend videotape me making a speech so I could see & hear what I really looked like to the world.... it's the same type of thing - but obviously much more important. It could help him improve his message when he responds to all the "complicated" issues he has on his plate.

healthcare reform." Are you saying that Student loans were one of the significant issues facing America, when we are in two wars, over our heads in debt, at the highest unemployment levels experienced by any current working age American, with elections controlled by corporate money, public airwaves controlled by a vanishingly small number of corporations? Noted.

I consider these pundits no different from Rushbo, they are all just making money on politics and none of them has analysis. 52. Please give me the number of your dealer.
I've got to get my hands on some of the stuff you're smoking.

Jon Stewart was fine in everyone's book, when he was criticizing W., but now that he dares do the same with Obama (and justifiably so) he's suddenly an asshole. What a joke!

Shamefully shocking for me is to see how many here are so thin-skinned that they cannot take any criticism of our current president. As a Kucinich supporter, I never believed Obama would be the catalyst for real change, so I'm not disappointed by him. Disappointing are only my fellow Democrats who still wander around with glassy eyes, muttering "hope" and "change", as if the words alone would bring about the event. It doesn't work like that.

Too bad the best I can say about President Obama is that he's better than McInsane/Failin. In the end, though, we will continue to be led down the path to corporate slavery, albeit with a friendlier face.

Some great victory!

The "it's complicated" thing - when I saw it, I realized it was true, but I hadn't really noticed it that blatantly until he put it all together. And it was funny. Not because it made Obama look that bad, just that it pointed out a phrase he's reaching for a little too often. People need to lighten up - I'm sure he has thicker skin than that.

Cause every time Senator Kerry does something positive, Jon always makes fun of him. He has been saying the senator is boring, wordy, and so on for years (like many don't already know).

Not surprising he and others are dumping on Obama, but he is a comedian and his job is to be entertaining.

62. Stewart expressed *his* frustration at what seems to take forever to get done
Edited on Wed Jun-09-10 04:25 PM by dave29
it was the "you are being too elitist" "we are getting impatient waiting for you to move" thing.

The problem is, Stewart, who normally reads up on his stuff, should understand that *nobody* has a solution for the gulf oil spill right now, and rather than harping on the President by lumping other complicated (yes, they are complicated) issues in with this one... he is insisting the President act... now. On something. Anything. Ignoring of course, that Obama has acted on a frighteningly disproportionate number of issues compared to his predecessor... who left him all these woes.

It was... lazy journalism. And that's sad to say about Stewart... but it happens to the funniest of us.

Edit to add: I do believe the President is in a lose lose situation here, for the time being, as are we all.

Big issues are complicated. Jon Stewart is still funny and the best thing on TV.

Making light of the fact that things are in fact complicated gets easy laughs, but I bet Stewart knows better.

In the end its comedy which includes the best biting social and political commentary out there. In the same segment he said we should count the census SLOWLY so we can preserve the jobs.

73. I love Jon Stewart......
What I love most about him is that he's not a consistent negative asshole simply looking
at anything to try and defeat this President.

That's makes him funny and effective when he does this kind of cutting critique....
because his intent is much different from so many of the President's critics,
even those here at DU.

Sure, sometimes he can cut like a knife, but he also recognizes the good that Obama has done....
and in the end, that makes him better than most round these parts, because it is very true,
this president is far from perfect. But what is also true, is that this President ain't
always wrong, unlike the way a lot of folks even those right here in this thread see it.

That's why when Jon Stewart or even Rachel have something to say, I can respect their view
so much more than those who simply hate on whatever the President is doing; whatever it is.
