1. Michelle Obama does make it hard for the
Repubs to convince people that she is a wild radical the way they wanted to do.

4. Right.
The repubs knew she wasn't a wild radical. They simply wanted to convince the sheep that she was a wild radical.

and when she's with children. I know she has so much more going for her, but right now she's really filling a necessary niche and making a huge difference. Her fight as FLOTUS is an excellent one. Food, obesity, exercise, and nutrition. The country needs that kind of push.

I love Michelle too!

22. She's the accidental FLOTUS
There was nothing in her life that could have led her to believe that she would ever even see the inside of the White House. Now she lives there. Unlike the bushco family, she wasn't born into wealth and circumstance that would "prepare" her for this role. She never lived in the governors mansion like HIllary or Rosalyn who at least had some idea what to expect.

We're seeing something very new and which is going to change this country in a big way. When he said "vote for change" I doubt anyone knew it was his wife who would be the one to make the most change in the White House.

I think we are witnessing something very spectacular.

25. I'm sure Michelle is a nice lady but she isn't anything extraordinary
Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 06:15 AM by cornermouse
as far as First Ladies go unless you want to compare her to Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, or Nancy Reagan and forget all the others. There's also the fact you keep overlooking that as a V.P. in a hospital, public relations were no doubt so deeply ingrained as to be second nature to her.

You appear to have forgotten that Hillary connected with a lot of people and she at least cracked the glass ceiling limiting First Lady activities to children and the kitchen that Michelle has refused to even challenge so far. Rosalyn's southern accent, charm, and unsnobby behavior connected very well with people. Betty Ford, yeah I know she's an R but given the fact that she broke with tradition and the First Lady mold makes her worth noticing, came into her own as a person after the White House when she admitted to alcoholism and built the Betty Ford Center. However, as far as First Ladies go, I still think that given her time period, Eleanor Roosevelt was probably the most notable First Lady we ever had. Michelle? Given her intelligence level, her education, and her previous position at the hospital, I think she has potential to do a lot more for women's causes and could have done a lot more as First Lady than she has so far. I'd give her no more than a "C".

26. I haven't forgotten anything
You assume foolishly. I didn't say a thing about other First Ladies. I simply pointed out something unique to Michelle Obama. Your lectures are what garnishes a "C"

Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 10:13 AM by cornermouse
and as strong as Michelle appears to be and gets to the position she's occupying, she doesn't have any responsibility to live up to her abilities? It sure sounds like that's what you're saying.

You were definitely hinting that Michelle transcended all other First Ladies. All I did was point out that's just not true.

Your words, not mine.

She has a J.D. from Harvard, worked as an attorney and a V.P. for a major hospital and all you want to talk about is how good she hugs the children?

27. It's nice and all, but I'm not convinced it's unique - it's sort of their "role" as women
which is a whole other issue.

The flotus role is in large part about showing women as nurturers. Diet, health, children - things that are expanded versions of housewife roles are allowed. Oil drilling policies, space policies, high tech stuff ... not so much.

28. We definitely need to get a woman president next...only not a repub.
That way, if there is a husband, he can provide the nurturing role...

35. I agree!
I liked Hillary a lot too because she was the first to break the mold about the role of First Ladies. Then Laura Bush dragged it back half a century. But outside of that the rest were OK.
