At the Travis County courthouse moments ago, lawyers for the state Democratic Party said they'd negotiated a two-week delay in any filing of candidates by the Texas Green Party. There will be a hearing in state court in Austin on June 24 on whether the Greens have violated Texas law by accepting a corporation's help in getting enough voter signatures to qualify its candidates for the ballot this fall.
Chad Dunn, general counsel for the Texas Democratic Party, said under the state election code the Greens "have 20 days from Saturday" to certify their slate of candidates. If I'm counting right, that's July 2. So the real decision could be made in two weeks, after a judge hears Democrats' case for an injunction.
Kat Swift, state coordinator for the Greens, has said the party won't field candidates without assurances that its petition drive was legal.
Democrats are worried that if Bill White, their nominee for governor, runs a competitive race against Republican incumbent Rick Perry this fall, liberal votes siphoned by the Green Party could tip the election Perry's way. Stay tuned
