1. Jerry Brown is correct about whitman...
There's is nothing about her that is funny...she is dangerous and I'll bet here she will be exposed in a big way before November.

This one, included.

It's just good that she's using her own money to boost the economy.

24. But on the other hand
Thanks to the abominable Opie Roberts "Shittyzens United" Supreme Court decision, Gold ManSacks will be able to dump how ever much money they want into her campaign. Every last penny of it swindled from the American working class.

5. Jerry Brown has won every election he's run in California
Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 12:46 PM by lunatica
We know him here.

Brown was elected Governor in 1974 and reelected in 1978, by over one million votes.

In 1998, Brown ran for mayor of Oakland against 11 other candidates and won in the primary with 59% of the vote. Before taking office, he successfully passed a voter initiative, changing the ceremonial office of mayor to that of a “Strong Mayor” form of city government. Brown was re-elected in 2002 with 64% of the vote.

Jerry Brown was elected California's 31st Attorney General on November 6, 2006. Brown's margin of victory, 18-points, was greater than that of any other candidate for statewide office.

32. The term "moonbeam" is now an honor. He was ahead of his time.
And he's the moonbeam we need here in California.

If there is anyone tailor made to step into that office now, it's Jerry Brown.

6. That article does exactly what he said
Takes a valid statement and contorts it so much that they've got him calling Whitman, Goebbels. They're using the exact propaganda tactics he was talking about.

7. Good point - it kind of makes it its own antidote
People have to speak of this because it is used against any Democratic candidate. It has to make it very hard for any serious Democratic politician to speak in a thoughtful way on many subjects. It is easy to twist what anyone says.

They are right that this will be spoken about to death, but it might inoculate him against what ever accusations come.

20. The use of anything Nazi is ususally considered over the line
Here, of course, he is speaking of a type of propaganda used by Goebbels.

28. So the 'accusation' is of being 'over the line'
I understand what you are saying, obviously. The point is that it is stupid, and to even hint at taking it seriously is even stupider.

29. I agree that it is stupid - and said so from the beginning
The fact is the media is playing with it. As Jerry Brown is a very known person in CA, I assume this will not hurt. In fact, I would hope that at some point the issue becomes the use of propaganda taking bits that anyone says and spinning them beyond recognition. The fact is the RW echo chamber has this down to a science and has used it - often successfully against many Democrats.

I have NO problem with his statement - other than the reference to Goebbels. I doubt he was the first to use this type of propaganda. You can find earlier examples in our own history. In fact, what has changed over the last 25 or so years is the magnitude of the echo chamber. The problem is that people read the same thing in the WSJ (once respectable, though Republican) that they see on all three cable stations at some time in the day and which is repeated ad nausium on talk radio. (Even NPR has started to lean right - probably due to Bush era changes.)

People think they are doing "due diligence" looking for multiple independent sources. The problem is that all mentioned are going from the same RW talking points.

8. Yes, if anyone can counter the bull Jerry can
I am surprised at some of the people here who support him. Don't they know that Jerry Brown, like Ralph Nader, believes there is little difference between the two parties?

9. Here is what he said:
"You know, by the time she's done with me, two months from now, I'll be a child-molesting ..." Sovern quoted Brown as saying. "She'll have people believing whatever she wants about me."

Then he added, "It's like Goebbels. ... Goebbels invented this kind of propaganda. He took control of the whole world. She wants to be president. That's her ambition, the first woman president. That's what this is all about."

I think Goebbels would be quite impressed with the state of American political discourse today. The fact that Politico is misrepresenting what he said as calling her a Nazi kind of proves his point, don't you think?

25. I'm sure he'll get past it, but it was a gaffe
The thing he needs to focus on is that Whitman thinks she can essentially buy the election and swift boat him by throwing out as many false things as possible and see what sticks. It reeks Rovian tactics. A better comparison would be to point out what happened in the 2004 election with Kerry and the swift boating techniques. Using those terms would have been safer.

13. The media can not manage that, because Jerry is known
and liked. Many here seem to have bought into the idea that Jerry is some sort of Moonbeam lightweight. He's a skilled politician who has never lost in CA. He's nobody's sap.
Politico does not know what it is speaking about. At all.

16. Yeah, He's Wrong
Goebbels didn't invent that kind of propaganda. It had been around for hundreds if not thousands of years. Goebbels was able to take advantage of emerging media to push it to new levels. He also put it in very succinct terms, kind of like Machiavelli.

Brown calls out Whitman, but really, these principles are used in most modern political campaigns in the US. The Swift Boat attacks on Kerry and the bit about Al Gore claiming to have invented the internet are examples from the past ten years. Heck, it was used for the Iraq War, too.

Hopefully he learns from this mistake early on and refocuses on pushing his message out. At least, unlike Boxer, he's immune to any catty criticism about his hair.

17. Yes, emergency satellite communications was such a bad idea ...
Governor Moonbeam nickname

As Governor, Brown proposed the establishment of a state space academy and the purchasing of a satellite that would be launched into orbit to provide emergency communications for the state—a proposal similar to one that was indeed eventually adopted. In 1978 in a Rolling Stone interview Linda Ronstadt called her then boyfriend, Jerry Brown, her "Little Moonbeam". After this an out-of-state columnist, Mike Royko, then at the Chicago Sun-Times, nicknamed Brown "Governor Moonbeam" because of the latter idea. In 1992, almost 15 years later, Royko would disavow the nickname, proclaiming Brown to be "just as serious" as any other politician.<14>

I will happily vote for Jerry!

Let the debates begin -- she can't buy her way into being intelligent on the issues - money doesn't buy everything, and it can't buy her a brain.
