I really am done with Republicans. I don't care about teabaggers because they are synonymous to Republicans---and anything that pushes Republican agenda endangers the lives of the American people in general. Those people don't care. Does anyone know if any Dems voted against the bills for expanding unemployment. Last I heard there were. These people definitely need to be voted out of office. Ugh.

1. Harkin is a good guy. It really is a shame but Harkin had a great idea on filibuster reform.

17. Maybe he was nearly crying because of the negative press he is getting about
his amendment to the Financial Reform Bill.

The measure, unrelated to the pending financial reform bill, was introduced by Rep. Gregory W. Meeks, a New York Democrat long known for his friendly relations with banking and corporate interests. It's the House version of a provision introduced earlier this week by Sen. Tom Harkin, a Democrat from Iowa.

The provision prevents the Securities and Exchange Commission from regulating equity-indexed annuities, financial products that promise guaranteed returns and other similar products by designating them as exempt from securities regulation -- even though they act like securities. It overturns court rulings and an SEC rule that determined these products were indeed securities, and thus should be regulated as such.

Consumer and investor advocates argue that the measure, which was adopted by House conferees by a 12-4 vote during Thursday's conference to reconcile the House and Senate versions of financial reform legislation, undercuts basic protections for investors and seniors, who often are tricked into purchasing these products under false pretenses.

In a 2008 speech on equity-indexed annuities, former SEC Chairman Christopher Cox referred to the "abusive sales practices often used to promote" them to seniors, and quoted a former head of the North American Securities Administrations Association who said her association's survey of the products revealed a "landscape littered with slick schemes and broken dreams" that had been "devastating" to victims and their families.

Last year the SEC ruled that these products were securities, rather than insurance, and hence subject to SEC regulation.

19. My guess is that this is local.
Princor is in Iowa and they do a lot with variable annuities.

I don't like this amendment, but Sen. Harkin has fought the good fight so many times that I can't get into berating Harkin for this.

2. I know, he acted so defeated. I just want to know that ALL rethugs
and Dems and Indies will be informed of what happened today. But will they? That bothers me.

4. I'm afraid that he knows more about how hopeless the politics
of this Country are and that accounts for his appearance of dejection.

5. This was the roll call
Edited on Thu Jun-24-10 06:47 PM by sabrina 1
I'm editing the post as it was not the final vote. Just the roll call.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=111&session=2&vote=00190

Now I heard but haven't checked, that Democrats voted for expanding it.

7. I have to correct that, that was just the roll-call
vote. Sorry, my mistake I am going to erase it if there's time.

11. Yes, I just emailed the president at Whitehouse.gov to tell him that...
I mentioned the courage he showed yesterday with a general and asked him if he could show it again with the Republican Senate and extend the benefits by executive order.

10. NO such thing as an INDEPENDENT Democrat. Please!
Lieberman made this up after he lost to Ned Lamont in the CT primary in 06.

Please DO NOT repeat this LIE. It is a fantasy. It is a lie. It is WRONG.

Sorry to be so much in caps but I feel very strongly about this. Joe has no right to make up this title for himself.

Please, on this board at least, can we say the truth?

Thanks.

18. Why?
Why so many Democrats voting against this? Is the bill not good enough in some way? I don't get it.

12. Let's keep this in focus: while the Republicans are certainly deserving of all the opprobrium we
can heap on them, let's not forget or ignore that 57 votes is more than enough to pass just about anything the Democrats REALLY want to pass.

If Harry Reid would simply insist on a "traditional"---i.e., REAL---filibuster, the GOP opposition would either wither away or be forced to "go public" with their mean-spirited and unAmerican agenda.

If the Democrats would just decide to stop playing patty-cake, we could do just about anything we wanted to. It's called smashmouth politics and the Republicans do it all the time.

Why don't we?

13. I think I'm in agreement with this now. I'm seriously fed up with this.
Dems need to realize if they are for the people then show it. I understand working with those jerks, but when it risks the livelihood of Americans, fuck them.

15. It's all theater...Dems don't want it to pass...
Just like healthcare reform. We had a Congressional majority and a
Democratic President. Yet, all we heard for months is how "tough"
it would be to pass healthcare legislation. OH, it was just so difficult!

The Dems and the Reps are beholden to the corporations. That's the only
game in town. They all get together and decide how the theater will be
played out--who will be the villains, who will be the fall guys, who will
give fiery speeches on the floor--for appearance purposes.

Many of us assume that our Dems are wimps or that they are constantly bullied
by the Republicans. Bullroar. They know exactly what they're doing. The corporations
get whatever the hell they please. That's EXACTLY what they're doing.
