Inouye to Become President Pro Tempore

The death of Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) puts Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI) in line to become president pro tempore of the Senate, a mainly ceremonial position that ranks third in line of succession to the presidency, the New York Times reports.

43. Maybe, maybe not
Inouye was born on September 7, 1924 in Honolulu, Hawaii. That's before it became an American state, so he may not be eligible for the presidency. Some will say yes, however, saying that when HI became a state, everyone living there became automatic citizens. But was he natural-born? Tha would be up to the Supreme Court, and yes it would go that far.

15. bingo! .......... we gotta do something to fix that!
I mistakenly thought that it was Leader Reid .... turns out the Speaker Pro Tem. is based on SENIORITY ..... after Byrd, the next most senior Senator (of the majority party) is Inoye.

Granted .... it is HIGHLY unlikely that the third in line would ever have to step into the office, but the fact that it's based on seniority and not on elected position is crazy.

19. Oh boy. So Nancy is 2nd in line after Joe. Making Byrd 3rd!!
Honestly, he is way too old to handle being President, and is in the hospital now. Of course, this has never happened. I do get nervous when they all travel together, to funerals. The reason why they have separate planes, always for the VP and Prez.

..... actually, the problem was not that I didn't realize that the Speaker Pro Tem was 3rd in line, it's that I thought the Majority Leader WAS the SPT.

32. Actually, it's only been that way since about 1913.
Before that, it was a rotating position elected by the Senate, and often the Senate president pro tem was not the most senior member.

31. The Senate president pro tem wasn't originally based on seniority.
It only became based on seniority within the past 100 years or so. Whoever held that position was elected by the Senate.

It was originally a rotating position for when the VP wasn't presiding, and had nothing to do with seniority.

John Tyler was the Senate president pro tem at the ripe old age of 45.
