Thurgood Marshall deserves this nation's undying gratitude, not trashing from the GOP
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 09:09 PM by Empowerer
As I just noted in another thread, Thurgood Marshall - and his mentor, Charles Hamilton Houston - saved this nation from a second Civil War.

These men, along with the plaintiffs they represented and the lawyers they worked with on the road to Brown, demonstrated patience, breathtaking foresight, and absolute legal genius. Facing what was believed to be unshakeable Supreme Court precedent, in which the Constitution was used to deny equal protection to millions of American citizens, they figured out a way to use the Constitution to correct itself. And then they made it happen. Had they not done this, I have no doubt that our nation would have plunged into a second civil war, from which we probably would never have recovered.

Thurgood Marshall did this when he could have been making a comfortable living as a lawyer or law professor. He did this when it put his life in danger.

Many African Americans of a certain age will tell you that, in the darkest days, when rights were trampled upon, lives threatened, humanity denied and they knew the government would likely not lift a finger to protect them (and, in fact, was often the perpetrator of the wrongs), they made the call. When the answer came, their spirits and hearts were lifted and they knew they could hold on just a little bit longer - all because of two words that made their way from home to home from church to church from person to person like a whispered lifeline: "Thurgood's coming."

Thurgood Marshall is an American hero. Anyone who dares to spit on this great man's memory and legacy for any but especially for the sake of scoring cheap political points needs to be called out on the spot.

4. I don't. We need to speak up loud and clear about who Thurgood Marshall was and what he means
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 09:20 PM by Empowerer
since there are plenty of people - especially younger people - who don't know much about him and may fall for these lies about him. We can't let that happen.

5. Yeah, young people know about Brown vs Board of education, but not Marshall or his role in it

As a high school and college graduate in the last 6 years, I can say that I never once heard of Thurgood Marshall in any of my history or political classes, and I'm a history buff who pays more attention then most would in those classes. I only learned about him after graduating college, reading about him on Internet forums like DU, and a newspaper article I read on him a few months ago that told his whole life story.

6. Yes, but the more the Repubs. make an issue of him, the more attention will be brought to him and
people WILL learn about who he was and why the Repubs. were so wrong for trashing him.
