Goldilocks Planet
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 02:01 AM by dave29
we are in a time where action is needed, and "principled stands" start to look to me like egotistical grandstanding, regardless of which side it comes from. And by side I mean Democrat v Republican, not just the factions on this board (sadly a distinction that must be made).

I grow weary of the argument that "nothing is better than something" -- because that is what many here are suggesting, and every Republican will agree with you. Look around you. You still have your fingers to type, and porridge to put in your mouth. Sadly, this means you have it pretty good. As Democrats, we should be fighting towards stopping the gusher that is our economic collapse, healthcare system, taking the lead on social justice and making the world safer from the acts that led to 9/11 and beyond. We should be working to fix the problems in *both* government and business, not deriding both because we don't like the "celebrities" in charge, or someone you like did not get a position you felt they should hold. Or someone did not do something fast enough or deliberatively enough, or with the best interests of (insert your cause here) in mind.

Recognize that everyone's opinion on how to do these things is valued, but not necessarily valuable. Suck it up.

Take action, even the smallest steps forward, and we have won the day.

I grow weary of arguments that "this is not good enough" -- nothing ever is. And I mean that truly. This logical fallacy is the root of greed. Your utopian world is not your neighbors utopian world. Suck it up, find your common ground and learn to stand on it, together. You say, it is not greedy to want social justice or meaningful reform. You will say those things until you realize your idealistic worldview will cause suffering to those you intend to help. Trust me, you are not helping right now, at all, by standing against what you perceive to be "more of the same". People need help yesterday, and while it is admirable to want the world for those who suffer, delivering it to them is impossible, while withholding what help can realistically be achieved... is morally repugnant.

My view is this. When everything is too hot or too cold, the thing that you think is just right will mean taking away from others. Period. While you may be the genius that has figured out how to run civilization -- after all these millenia -- maybe give some of us some time to catch up, and in the meantime... help us morans make real progress towards helping those who are suffering now.

We live in a relativistic universe. So many do not understand that what they see and feel is completely different from what the person standing next to them sees or feels. Wrapping ones head around this simple concept would go a long way towards making our country whole again. When I think about this planet floating through space and the billions of years it has done so, I recognize that in the grand scheme... any progress made in a single lifetime is so very significant. And we should be proud of it, not whining about who was just thrown under the bus.

Because I hate to tell you... one giant space rock hidden in the sun's glare... and we are all under the proverbial bus...

it's simple physics.

Peace.

1. Principles are necessary components of *every* meaningful movement
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 01:53 AM by newthinking
You can't separate them.

The point is to determine *which* principles are the important ones that people can fight for together.

3. You just made every cold hearted regime feel a lot better about itself

Principles are in the eye of the beholder. Progress is action taken towards the greater good, not snuffing it out so you can proclaim moral victory.

4. You say that like your post isn't a giant absolutist statement?
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 02:05 AM by newthinking
So, for trying to claim realism and compromise to bring people together you just used absolutism to attempt to shut me down.

Think about it....

buh bye. I will go read elsewhere. I can see where this is heading

5. I am not shutting you down, you are shutting yourself down.
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 02:19 AM by dave29
I just pointed out that principles are in the eye of the beholder. Do you not agree that Republicans see themselves as principled? I see myself as principled but I do not demand that all my needs are met before I support progress. Period. If that is abolutist (whatever that means), I guess I am absolutely absolutist.

And by the way I agree with your edited comment. Agreeing on which principles, however, requires compromise.
