olberman said something the other night that's had me thinking.
Now, I'm a liberal, human rights believing, multicultural living, everyone loving sort of person who doesn't buy for a second those bs arguments that blame poor people trying to make a living for unemployment. I know that immigration is just a bogeyman to stir up the angry.
But the more I think about it, the more I might be willing to support "the fence" and "troops on the border." Maybe the best thing to do is call their bluff.
Olberman had the number of 100 billion dollars. I don't know where he came up with that. But whatever the number, it is going to coast money. Dare the republicans to come up with it. Are they going to take it from defense? Are they going to raise taxes? Of course not. What they do is run up the debt. But they are doing a whole pot calling the kettle black thing over the debt, so dare them. Tell them to go ahead. Find the money and go for it.
And where are those troops going to come from? Draft them? Pull them out of Afghanistan? There are 15K marines in Okinawa, want to shut those bases down and move them to the border? Go for it. I'd like them to be closer to home anyway.
Maybe building a super big fence would be a good public works project. Good old socialist labor, redistributing tax money from libertarians blessed with a job to those ornery, lazy unemployed. Put people to work, a shovel ready stimulus project. Dare them. Go ahead. Let's get to work building it.
They'll probably want to do it on the cheap and hire illegal Mexican labor to build it.
And since that fence will be there, we're going to have to do something with the folks on this side of it. Make a path to citizenship a part of the deal.
And when they balk, let them have the blame for it.
