Ky. Senatorial Candidate Rand Paul Stirs Some Anger With Remarks About Poverty, Drug Fight
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul says the poor in the U.S. are "enormously better off than the rest of the world," citing a decades-old film that showed even low-income homes had color televisions.

Paul made the comment last week at a forum in Louisville. The film he referred to was a piece of anti-American propaganda that he said "backfired" on the Soviet government.

Paul, who said some things could be better, praised capitalism as "our American way."

Charles Hardin, a Democratic Judge-Executive from Magoffin County, took issue with Paul's remarks about the poor and a suggestion that fighting drug abuse should be paid for at the local level. He said they reflect "a dogmatic belief" about limited government that doesn't address Kentuckians needs.

1. Oy
everytime this guy opens his mouth more stupid comes out. Here's a news flash for Mr. Paul. Poverty is not measured by whether or not you have a color TV. :eyes:

We shouldn't have to measure our poverty levels based on how people in Somalia and Ethiopia live. It's apples and oranges. Those are not weathly nations. We are a wealthy nation.

4. Maybe Rand Paul wants poor Americans to live like Somalis
I think that would make a dandy campaign slogan: "Rand Paul wants you to starve and die like impoverished Africans!" Should play well with his racist base.

2. Oh for fuck's sake!
Who *doesn't* have a color TV these days?

Poor people in this country also (mostly) have clean water and regular access to food of some sort, unlike many poor people in the Third World. Doesn't mean they aren't still poor, though.

Every time I think he's said the dumbest thing imaginable, he comes out with something even more mind numbing.

3. Yeah, they have color TV's
and they are paying 10X's what they are worth, since they are renting them from your "friendly neighborhood rent-a-center...

5. Or they're hand-me-downs.
We have a pretty decent color TV, and a fairly big flat-screen monitor. They were given to us by people who were buying newer models. They look nice, but we paid nothing for them, and if they stop working, we won't be able to replace them.

But yeah, we have a color TV.

8. I never bought a TV in my life.
But I usually have one. I didn't have one for a while but I still had to turn down someone's offer to give me an old one.

7. Well it's true
even if the video and Paul are idiotic. It's pretty easy to not starve to death in the US even if you're homeless. That's not true everywhere in the world.
