Bush ally: Black Panther story a ‘fantasy’ to ‘topple Obama’
A Bush administration civil rights appointee says the conservative media uproar over allegations the Justice Department is protecting the New Black Panther Party from voter-intimidation prosecution is a "fantasy" designed to oust Attorney General Eric Holder and harm the Obama administration.

"This doesn’t have to do with the Black Panthers; this has to do with their fantasies about how they could use this issue to topple the administration,” Abigail Thernstrom, former vice chairwoman of the US Commission on Civil Rights, told Politico.

“My fellow conservatives on the commission had this wild notion they could bring Eric Holder down and really damage the president,” Thernstrom said.

Thernstrom's views on this issue line up with many voices in the progressive media, who argue the claims that the Justice Department is showing pro-African American racial bias are illegitimate.

Blogger Karoli at Crooks and Liars notes that Thernstrom has been known for her otherwise socially conservative views, including opposition to affirmative action.

1. Really 3 guys standing outside a voting place with 1 stick is an attempt at disfranchising
the whole white community of their right to vote in a mostly black district, yet how many black districts in 2004 were discouraged to vote when voting machines were short changed so voters had to stand in line for 4 to 12 hours before getting a chance to cast their votes and where was these nit wits outrage then? I know because I cast my vote in 2004 in a black district and I stood in line for 4 hours even though my disability only allows me to stand comfortably for 15 minutes, so screw the nit wit sore losers.

3. And let's not forget how many African-American Voters were
pulled from the rolls by Jeb Bush & Katherine Harris in 2000. Al Gore would've been president instead of Bush.

TAMPA -- Kelvin King was turned away from the polls here in November when records showed that he was ineligible to vote as a convicted felon. County election officials learned days later that King's civil rights had been restored eight months earlier.

Sandylynn Williams had voted in every election since she was 18. But this time, election officials confused her with her sister -- a felon who had once used Williams's name -- and refused to let her vote.

"They sent me a letter of apology, and I just laughed," recalled Williams, 34, who said she had planned to vote for Democratic nominee Al Gore. "I was cheated out of voting."

The Tampa residents were among hundreds, perhaps thousands, of non-felons in Florida who civil rights lawyers contend were wrongly prevented from voting in the Nov. 7 election after state election officials and a private contractor bungled an attempt to cleanse felons from voter rolls.

4. Yeah I also remember here in Michigan in 2008, they started a purge of
the voter registrations and it took a court order to end the purge after it was discovered that people where being put on the list if they had moved from one county to another in 2008. I know I had registered when I moved from Kent county to Saginaw county in June of 08, then I didn't get my registration card so in July I made a phone call and found out I wasn't registered, so I registered again at the local secretary of state office. In september of 08, I believe, I went on line and found out I still wasn't registered so I contacted the county's Democratic party office who had me fill out an on line registration at the Democratic party web site and by october my registration card showed up in my mail box. The problem was I was being purged from the system every time I registered, I was really pissed as I had been an active voter since 1979 and never missed an election cycle.

5. And let's not forget the FL state troopers sent around to black
neighborhoods to "visit" the local get-out-the-vote activists. Or the fake flyers that papered black neighborhoods, saying the wrong date to vote.

Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 06:49 AM by polmaven
that the felony charges against the New Black Panthers were reduced on January 7th 2009......Eric Holder was apparently part of the Bush Administration!....Who knew?
