what if the Spooners were no longer alive?

the testimony of the Spooners is what really saved Sherrod. Without the Spooners, the charge of racism would still be total bullshit, but all the cowards would have a shred of plausibility to hang onto. And as long as they could hang onto it, they would have. They're not backing down now out of the goodness of their hearts, they're backing down now because they got busted.
