1. Yes he had a ot of time of, but first because his mother was dying
Then his father was dying. If you watch his show you would know that. He's actually on vacation now, and I for one think he deserves it.

11. you said "vacation"
and the recent time off (4 months ago) was not vacation but to care for a loved one and also a time after that loved one's death.

your error is on you.

the Family Medical Leave Act.

22. +1 Glad you mentioned that.
I was thinking the very same thing.

people seem to forget that things like the FMLA: http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/fmla/ might actually apply to people in the media.

6. KO has had a personally sucky year,
he needs the vacation.

Jon Stewart, on the other hand, better damn well come back with a doctor's note explaining his absence. . .

10. Dying father--dying mother-- Time off but hardly a vacation. Hardly deserves profanity on your part
Edited on Mon Jul-26-10 07:29 PM by Hekate
Nor does it deserve laughter.

Also, "wholly" means "entirely." The usual construction is "holy" shit.

I wouldn't call his time at his ailing parent's side a 'vacation'. :puke:

18. Well to be fair
Edited on Tue Jul-27-10 12:11 PM by Politics_Guy25
Us middle-class or poor struggling folk don't get to take 4 months off to take care of our sick relatives. Our options are a) quit your job to take care of the family b) get unpaid leave or c)get 2-3 weeks off at a time and that's it.

Keith, on the other hand, gets to show up for work only when he feels like it. What other job is there where you get to show up when you feel like it?

I certainly will not cry a river for Keith Olbermann and it has nothing to do with his views. I agree with pretty much everything that he says.

21. I am sorry for your loss.
How on earth do you know that KO gets to "show up when he feels like it"? How do you know he wasn't using the Family Medical Leave Act? You don't. Nice compassion you have for others. :-(

28. Many in the middle class can take a couple months to care for relatives
using sick leave.

far too many cannot. but many can.

Keith was never away for 4 months. He was away for a few weeks around each parent's death.

I've had coworkers who missed more work under similar circumstances.

And I guess the main reason I'm lashing at you a bit is that you just cannot resist the opportunity to use your post to mock Keith's position and the time he took off --quite callously too.

Maybe I shouldn't cry a river when you need time off.

20. My dad got 4 days off when my grandma died who his wife/my mom adored
Edited on Tue Jul-27-10 12:16 PM by Politics_Guy25
My mom was devastated and almost died herself when my grandma/her mom died. She was just crushed. Us middle class folk, i.e., my dad, only got 1 day off for the day she died, and then 3 days to plan and go to the funeral. That's it.

My dad didn't get 6 months off to deal with his grief and to help my mom who was coming apart get through it either or to take care of my grandfather, the widow.

Furthermore, Brian Willliams, Chris Matthews, Katie Couric, and Diane Sawyer don't take nearly the amount of time off that Keith does. Not to mention Wolf Blitzer or Anderson Cooper. I abhor Anderson Cooper's GOP views but at least he's a workhorse. Keith is anything but.

24. I am sorry about what happened.
http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/fmla/

Here is a quick primer:
Covered employers must grant an eligible employee up to a total of 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period for one or more of the following reasons:
for the birth and care of the newborn child of the employee;
for placement with the employee of a son or daughter for adoption or foster care;
to care for an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent) with a serious health condition; or
to take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition.

If your family could not take time off, this is not KO's fault or any other member of the media ( ANY -- left or right).

KO did not take six months off. YOUR Father deserved time that is granted to him under this law. I understand that it might not have been paid, but that is something that should be taken up with his employer.

Anger is justified, but it would be nice for the blame to properly be placed.

19. Right now, it's midsummer, the slow time for politics.
Quite a few talk show hosts are getting their vacations in now before the silly season starts.

And as mentioned, Keith had to take a lot of time off previously to deal with his parents getting sick and dying.

23. This may be a rejuvenation period
for Mr. Olbermann. He has had a lot to deal with.He had the passing of his mother. He delt with the failing health of his father. And ultimatly his father's passing. And he put in time to fundraise for TheFreeclinics organization (they sponser healthcare clinics for the uninsured and under insured).Plus did his show and if anything big happened while he was out ,he would come back just to let the repugs and anyone else who has messed up with the people of this country and viewing audience have it and return back to his business..And he has to have a personal life in there somewhere.Whatever vacation you are on Mr.Olbermann please enjoy yourself,have the best time,get much needed rest,and come back refreshed and ready to help us wax those asses of repugs so they can slide right out the door of Congress.
