Looney backs Malloy in governor’s bid
NEW HAVEN — State Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney, D-New Haven, has praised both Democrats running for governor in the fast-approaching primary, but said Dan Malloy, with his experience as the longtime mayor of a major city, makes him the better candidate.

New Haven’s large delegation at the May Democratic convention gave its votes to Ned Lamont, but the city’s loyalty is expected to be divided in the Aug. 10 primary.

Many of the dozens crammed into Malloy’s city headquarters Sunday, from some aldermen to past city officials, have been at odds with New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr., who beat Malloy four years ago in the Democratic primary for governor — a fight that continues to leave hard feelings between them.

DeStefano and the big city mayors in Connecticut came out early for Lamont, as have state House Speaker Christopher Donovan, D-Meriden, and state Senate President Pro Tem Donald Williams, D-Brooklyn, but Looney is the latest among leadership to back Malloy in what is expected to be a tight race.

1. Aw bummer
I saw the headline, and thought maybe somebody was trying to draft Mike Malloy to run for governor in Georgia.

Now THAT would kick ass..... except he would probably have to quit his radio show. :evilfrown:

2. Looney is the "turncoat "that backed LIEberman against
Lamont in the Senate race last time. I'm sure he helped him win!! Everyone that I know is voting for Lamont this time...mainly because of the Education issue in Ct.'s Schools. We need more federal funding for public schools, and there are no funds left for State college students work study program loans. One of my grandsons who is entering his third year at UCONN may not be able to attend this next semester, and it's breaking his parents hearts. Thay are voting for Ned!!! He's big on education and small business.

4. Long message but could not let one comment go unchallenged.

“If we do not elect a governor who knows how to run a government, then the government will run the governor.”

I do not personally know a anyone who supports Lamont. Lamont lost the Democratic Nominating convention by more than 2 to 1; even though he had the curious backing of the two biggest party machines in Connecticut. (Wonder what that cost?) Heck, Lamont barely got the majority vote from his own town’s delegation.

Lamont will not abide by the Connecticut campaign finance reforms that he gave lip service to a year ago.
He is afraid to debate Malloy for a second time on TV because Malloy is so obviously the better choice.

First you need to know that Dan Malloy was the longest serving mayor in the city of Stamford CT that is almost the same size of Hew Haven or Hartford.

Yes, but why Malloy?
Because Dan Malloy is the only candidate from either party who knows how to run a government. He is the Progressive candidate. He is going by the rules of the campaign finance reform law. He will not take donations greater than $100 form anyone, any corporation or even his own family.

He walks the walk that he talks. He’s a straight shooter who can handle the mess in our state of Connecticut.

When it comes to EDUCATION, Malloy created the ONLY open enrolment for all 4 year olds in his city, no matter if the parents have the money or not. That program is a huge success in Stamford and he will bring that to the entire state. He was an elected Board of Education member before he was the mayor. He knows the issues that have to be covered if we want meaningful education reform in our state.

Before he became mayor, crime was dreadful in Stamford. Now people walk all over the down town district even late into the night without fear.

Dan Malloy is committed to Civil Rights including the rights of the LGBT community. Malloy was the greatest force in getting the first and only openly gay senator elected as our states highest ranked political office holder. Later, Malloy was the official who performed the wedding of that senator and his partner. Connecticut is one of just a hand full of states where same-sex marriage is legal.

Malloy helped secure the Democratic nomination of the first openly gay person, Kevin Limbo, to run in a state-wide election as Comptroller of the State of Connecticut. He is being challenged in the primary by the hand picked machine’s candidate, on the same line and by the same non-progressives opposed to Malloy.

Dan Malloy stood by and stands by the LGBT community, even in the face of all those who would deny the community of their rights.

He has the backing of some of the largest labor unions in the state. He even got the Health Care Worker’s union as well as the Health Care Facility owners organization to endorse him. They have never backed the same candidate before.

The long and the short of it is, Malloy can get elected in November and know what he is doing the first day on the job. Lamont knows how to count the millions of dollars that he got the old fashion way. Daddy gave it to him.

Now at least you get the point.

5. Was talking to my neighbor about this race. He is voting for Malloy in the primary
but will support Lamont if he is the candidate in the general.

I have mixed feelings. While I don't feel as you do about Lamont, having worked with Annie on fundraising for Planned Parenthood in Greenwich and being a volunteer for his Senate bid, I do have my reservations about his chances for success as governor. I like Malloy and I know he has the kind of experience he'll need for the job of governor. My big fear is that Lamont will go in with high hopes and get shipwrecked and the next governor will be a republican. Look at what happened to Lowell Weicker...and we got John Rowland as a result!

I would also not like to see Ned jerked around by the likes of John DeStefano, our corrupt and inept mayor here in New Haven...
