The persistence of Hillary
The persistence of Hillary
As secretary of state, Clinton has made an impression across the globe and spectrum.

By Frida Ghitis

If you want to find a harsh crowd for an American official, send him - or her - to Pakistan. That's why reviews of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's stop in Islamabad during her latest dizzying tour of international trouble spots should make us take notice.

"Drum roll for Hillary," wrote Rizwan Ghani in the Pakistan Observer, "because she has hit a home run."

Hillary, as she is known around the globe, does not earn accolades just for her cheerful smile. She is tough as nails.
In fact, she's much tougher than her boss, President Obama. And her mastery of complicated issues can leave observers' jaws dangling from their hinges.

The Pakistani daily Dawn spoke of her "Iron fist in a velvet glove," as it described her taking on Pakistani officials over tense problems, including Afghanistan, the Taliban, China-Pakistan nuclear cooperation, Indo-Pakistani water disputes, and so on.

And that was just one stop on the trip. In South Korea, she sent one of the strongest messages this administration has issued to Pyongyang, and then walked right up to the edge of the DMZ, within inches of nervous North Korean soldiers.

6. I think she's better in this role than she would have been as president
I know it's way too much to hope that anyone who would like to wind down our imperial foreign policy would be let within 1000 miles of national office. At least smart imperialism gets fewer people killed.

8. It's the most grinding job except for the president. I'd be surprised if she
wants to do it for 8 years, but as long as she's there - she's terrific. My admiration for Obama doubled the day he picked her.

21. Can you imagine a world where Hillary had been Secretary of State for 8 years? What a great world
that would be.

3. Good for HRC!
I doubt if she'll do another term....she says it's pretty exhausting, but maybe there is another place for her w/o so much travel.

Personally, I'd like to a see her as head of Defense....Now that would be something. The boyz would shit their panties.

4. How about Senate Majority Leader, if she ran for her old seat?
Doubtful that she would, but personally I think she would be an EXCELLENT majority leader.

11. LOL I saw the second one actually.
I think VP is much too dull a job for her. I think Biden is doing a great job, don't get me wrong, but I can't see her as VP.

I know she really loved being in the Senate, so I have to wonder if she would want to go back.

20. When?
I will tell you when.If we lose the House to the Repubs and lose a number of seats in the Senate AND the economy is still in the tank big time in the summer of 2011,you will hear a lot of "chatter " that Obama can't win a second term.IMHO.maybe sooner

Apparently it isn't enough that President Obama gave her the job of a lifetime, the incessant drum beat continues.

15. As does, apparently,
the incessant drum beat of Hillary Hate. Is it not acceptable for people to continue to admire someone who has accomplished a great deal for this country? It takes absolutely nothing away from MY admiration for the president to also hold a place in my heart for Hillary. She is doing an admirable job.

17. The Clintons have earned my contempt.
I started here at DU a huge Clinton supporter and defender some five years back. Research it if you don't believe me. It took some really asshole behavior on their part during the primaries to turn my once good opinion on its head.

The nonstop drive to promote and push her out there, some of your buddies causally suggesting Joe Biden step aside for her, others suggesting she run against him in 2012 after he graciously gave her the job of lifetime is beyond disgusting. It just plays out the same level of abject disrespect for him, a precedent both Clintons set and promoted during the primary.

The piece de resistance is the so-called progressives here who have a long history of despising the Clintons now pretending she is their progressive savior in a demented acting out of their contempt for this president.

It's one sick fucking charade that is a cancer on the Democratic Party. Yes I despise the Clintons and that is entirely their fault.

Oh, please......

I guess that you were blind to Obama's campaign tactics and only saw the other side. How convenient.

Besides, if both the left and the right hate the Clintons in equal amounts, then they must be doing something right as the nations trends toward the center. Sometimes I read this board and think that I'm at the Freepers' site. Different side of the same coin.

22. Yes, HOW DARE an article be written about Hillary Clinton!!! Why do you seem to think any positive
articles about her just HAVE to be influenced by the Clintons and/or their associates? And why don't you display the same scrutiny/skepticism for positive articles written about President Obama, Senator Kerry, and other Democratic pols you favor?

Since she became SOS there have been many similar articles as the one posted. As opposed to most candidates who lose presidential elections, her profile has risen and many people are finally realizing what she is capable of doing. She has a brilliant intellect and works extremely hard. She's a policy wonk and has an amazing capacity for remembering large reams of data. Aside from the fact that she has a great sense of humor, which is something that tends to surprise people who don't know her. To paraphrase Obama, Hillary is more than likable enough.

:D

I have been to exactly where she was at .Spent a year on the 38th parallel starring at Joe.Trust me their guards are not nervous. The only way to read them are hard as nails and cold as ice. This is how they are trained.North Koreans get extra tall Koreans so they dont look as small compared to GIs as most Koreans do .They are very disciplined,to say the least, and certainly not nervous Nellies.Time will tell how Hillary will do .My grades for her as of now ;Korea b+,Afgan......C.Middle East d.
