Looks like criticism from Rachel Maddow contributed to Gibbs' comments against "Professional Left"
Edited on Tue Aug-10-10 09:19 AM by 30rock
In a recent The Hill's article on Robert Gibbs' comments against the "professional left," (which according to Gibbs would not be happy even if Dennis Kucinich were President), the author mentions some of the attacks from the Left against the White House, including the one highlighted in bold, by Rachel Maddow:

Just last week, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow described Obama political adviser David Axelrod as a “human pretzel” for his explanation of the administration’s position on gay marriage. Axelrod had explained that Obama opposes same-sex marriage but favors equal benefits for partners in gay relationships.

Attacks from liberal political groups like the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), which raises money for liberal candidates and causes, are also frustrating to the White House.

Adam Green, one of PCCC’s founders, repeatedly blasted Obama for a “loser mentality” during the healthcare debate, criticizing the president and Emanuel for not trying harder to include the public option in the final healthcare legislation. The group even ran ads accusing Obama of ignoring the will of the millions who voted for him by courting the support of Republican Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe.

1. The media assholes have no idea what contributed.
They're part of the fucking problem, spending a week hyperventilating about Michelle Obama's vacation.

15. I did nothing of the sort.
You are blaming the media, along with the left, and presumably the right for the problems. I have also seen Congress be blamed. I have seen honest journalists dismissed or attacked. Leakers have been blamed.

I am just pointing out that YOU want to blame everyone except the WH.

Do you believe they share none of the blame?

18. I made a comment about the media, and you jumped in to deflect it to the WH.
That's defending the media.

5. Maddow is a good example of why Gibbs is full of shit
she's been very critical at times of Obama, but at the same time she has made sure to point out his accomplishments. She devoted a whole segment to just listing what has gotten done since he became president. And Gibbs knows this very well because Obama himself played that segment when he appeared at the Netroots thing.

Gibbs didn't mention Maddow specifically, but the same could be said of almost all Obama critics. They are not as unfair to Obama as Gibbs is pretending they are.

Anyway, he ought to be directing his irritation at the RW noise machine, not the few voices of reason we have left.

in the very way allowed to in a democracy.

8. A representative of the chief executive essentially telling a...
...dissenting voice to shut up is not democracy. Democracy is rule by the people, not say what you want if it is all right with the chief executive.

Are you responding to Gibbs by saying Maddow etc. are just doing what they are allowed to in a democracy or is your criticism only for those who challenge the status quo?

by further alienating Obama's base, you know the people that got him elected. Good luck in 2012 Mr. President.

9. He did twist like a pretzel
If you watch that segment with Axelrod, he is twisted up like a pretzel. I suspect he doesn't even agree with Obama on the point. But he was left saying that Obama was glad that the courts overturned a law that supported the presidents position on gay marriage, but that he didn't like. And Axelrod is basically screwed when then asked about the potential consequences if this stands. It basically ends DOMA, and it forces the states to recognize gay marriage, and Obama can't say he supports that. But he likes the decision because the law was mean for doing what Obama thinks is right.

That's a pretzel and I don't care who is saying it.

12. David Axelrod's response on the WH stance on gay marriage
was embarrassing and totally fucking nonsensical. I am convinced that it is amateur hour up in the White House with Gibbs attacking the base and David Axelrod giving confusing as fuck answers to questions.

16. We have no idea if Gibbs actually complained about any of this
There is very little actual context to the words attributed to Gibbs.

Not that that should get in the way of the overblown outrage of the day.
